\nOXFORD, Miss. – “Does it move?” That’s the first question
\npeople usually ask of the recently installed 6 ft.-diameter
\nglobe gracing the rotunda of renovated Bryant Hall at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\n“How fast does it move?” is usually the next question, said
\nWilliam F. Lawhead, chair of the Department of Philosophy
\nand Religion. “Many students simply stop by to see if the
\nglobe actually moves, then leave still wondering, because
\nthe movement – which matches the Earth’s rotation – is
\nhardly visible to the human eye.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe globe was designed by Todd Ulrich, president of
\nCincinnati-based Worldfx Inc., which provides
\nstate-of-the-art, real-world visualizations of the Earth
\nusing satellite imagery.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“This is the largest, most detailed globe in the world
\nemploying state-of-the-art satellite data and cartography
\nenabled by GIS software,” Ulrich said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe globe, which took Ulrich nine months to construct, has
\nbeen creating as much buzz as Bryant Hall itself, which
\nunderwent a complete renovation, including heartwood pine
\nflooring, a penny-tiled entrance hall, stained glass in its
\nrotunda and lavish furnishings by Shea-Moore Designs of
\nMemphis.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBuilt in 1911, the building originally housed the
\nUniversity Library, Medical School Library, University
\nMuseum, and reading rooms and faculty offices, said Gerald
\nWalton, provost emeritus and professor emeritus of English.
\n“About one year later, they installed gymnastic equipment
\nfor women to exercise and the unused basement became known
\nas the women’s gym.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn 1951, the departments of Speech, Theatre and Art moved
\ninto the hall and it became known as the Fine Arts
\nBuilding. By the 1980s, speech and theatre were moved
\nacross campus, and in 1984, the building was renamed in
\nhonor of Vice Chancellor Emeritus W. Alton Bryant.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nLast spring, upon completion of the second phase of
\nrenovation, Bryant Hall became home to the departments of
\nPhilosophy and Religion, and Classics. Besides new, wired
\nclassrooms and administrative offices, the building
\nprovides open gathering space on the main floor for
\nstudents and faculty.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWhile the aim of the renovation was to provide
\nstate-of-the-art space for faculty and students, another
\ngoal was to protect the originality of the old library,
\nsaid Bill Anderson, construction manager.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The first renovation was about three or four years ago,
\nand this included updating the infrastructure,” Anderson
\nsaid. “The second renovation was a bit more painstaking. We
\nhad to either replace or replicate many original aspects.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn fact, it took nearly a month to replace the penny tiles
\nin the hall’s entrance, which was done by hand. In
\naddition, the stairwell to the rotunda was enclosed and the
\nfloors refinished or replaced with heartwood pine. The
\nstained glass at the top of the rotunda is original to the
\nbuilding, Anderson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShea-Moore Designs of Memphis provided the sofas, chairs,
\nlamps, paintings and maps of Paris and London for the
\nfaculty lounge and gallery. Lynda Lee Mead Shea, Ole Miss
\nalumna and Miss America 1960 is president of the company.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSo, just how fast does the globe move? “It moves
\napproximately five thirty-seconds of an inch every minute,”
\nLawhead said. “This means it makes one full rotation every
\n24 hours, just like the Earth.”
