\nOXFORD, Miss. – American trumpeter and composer Wynton
\nMarsalis performs Monday (Sept. 24) at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe popular instrumentalist, with the Jazz at Lincoln
\nCenter Orchestra, takes the stage at 8 p.m. at the Ford
\nCenter for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $65, $62, $60
\nand $55 for various seating and available by calling the UM
\nBox Office at 662-915-7411.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I can think of no better way to start the season than with
\nWynton Marsalis and what really is the world’s best
\nAmerican jazz ensemble,” said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center
\ndirector. “This continues the Ford Center and the
\nuniversity’s tradition of presenting the very best of great
\nAmerican music. Every performance by Wynton Marsalis and
\nthe Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is a glimpse of music
\nhistory being made.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOne of six sons of jazz legend Ellis Marsalis, Wynton
\nMarsalis has made his reputation with a combination of
\nskill in jazz performance and composition. As of 2006, he
\nhad made 16 classical and more than 30 jazz recordings and
\nhad received nine Grammys, as well as the Pulitzer Prize
\nfor Music, which was the first time for the prize to be
\nawarded for a jazz recording.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA constituent company of the Lincoln Center performing arts
\norganization in New York City, the orchestra features 15
\njazz soloists and ensemble musicians who have been its
\nresident members for more than 13 years.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWith Marsalis directing, the orchestra spends more than
\nhalf the year on tour, performing a varied repertoire, from
\nrare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln
\nCenter-commissioned works, including compositions and
\narrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher
\nHenderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy
\nGillespie and Benny Goodman. Guest conductors have included
\nBenny Carter, Jimmy Heath and Gerald Wilson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs part of the Lincoln Center’s programming, the orchestra
\nperforms and leads educational events in New York, across
\nthe U.S. and around the world. At venues that include
\nconcert halls, jazz clubs and river boats, the group
\nperforms with symphony orchestras, ballet troupes, local
\nstudents and an ever-expanding roster of guest artists.
