\n OXFORD, Miss. — Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said
\nFriday that the U.S. Senate missed a key
\nopportunity two weeks ago to begin working on a
\ncompromise regarding the war in Iraq.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\n On the University of Mississippi campus with former
\nSen. Tom Daschle, (D-S.D.), Lott said the Senate
\nshould have begun working in a bipartisan fashion
\nfollowing the status report from U. S. Army Gen.
\nDavid Petraeus, commander of the Multi-National
\nForce in Iraq.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “We missed an opportunity to come together in the
\nlast couple of weeks,” Lott said. “We can’t
\nmicromanage the war in Iraq, but we could have come
\ntogether to begin to lay out a plan, to set some
\nbenchmarks, for withdrawal. It would be worth the
\neffort to at least talk about it, and over time
\nreach an agreement.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Lott and Daschle were on the UM campus for a public
\ncoffee-table discussion titled “A Conversation with
\nLeaders.” Sponsored by the university’s Trent Lott
\nLeadership Institute, the event allowed the two
\nsenators to share with students and the community
\nhow congressional leaders can work in a bipartisan
\nfashion.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “It’s critical that leaders keep trying to find
\ncommon ground,” Daschle said, regarding the Iraq
\nwar debate. “There are 535 congressional leaders
\nrepresenting some 300 million Americans, so we need
\ncivility. You can’t keep throwing rocks at each
\nother.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n To work in a bipartisan manner on any matter that
\ncomes before Congress, Lott said liberals and
\nconservatives must find a moderate common ground.
\nWith the Senate evenly divided between Republicans
\nand Democrats, it still takes 60 votes to pass
\nlegislation, he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “Republicans can’t keep trying to find 10 moderate
\nliberals to join their side of the debate, and
\nDemocrats can’t try to move 10 moderate
\nconservatives to their argument. The key is finding
\n30 Republicans and 30 Democrats in the center to
\nagree on any resolution.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n From 1996 to 2002, Sen. Lott and Daschle served
\ntogether either as Senate majority or minority
\nleaders. Daschle is the first Democrat invited to
\nspeak as part of the Lott Leadership Lecture Series
\nat UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Both agreed that leaders from different regions of
\nthe country with diverse philosophical beliefs can
\nwork together as long as there is trust, open
\ncommunication, respect, consideration and courage.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Lott and Daschle also discussed how they worked
\ntogether to overcome their greatest obstacle, the
\nterrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “Both parties were resistant, but we knew we had to
\ncome together for America,” Lott said. “It was a
\ntrying time for all of us.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Daschle agreed, saying, “I’ll never forget,
\nDemocrats and Republicans holding hands together,
\nand singing ‘God Bless America.’ We started working
\ntogether that moment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Curtis Wilkie, former national and foreign
\ncorrespondent for The Boston Globe and holder of
\nUM’s Kelly G. Cook Chair of Journalism, said the
\ndiscussion was beneficial, especially for students
\nwho attended.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “This conversation demonstrates that reasonable men
\nwith different views can work together to get
\nthings accomplished,” Wilkie said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Lott and Daschle met before the forum with students
\nmajoring in public policy leadership or journalism.
\nAfterwards, the Overby Center for Southern
\nJournalism and Politics hosted a reception for the
\nsenators.
