{"id":30340,"date":"2013-08-29T10:11:04","date_gmt":"2013-08-29T15:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=30340"},"modified":"2016-07-28T14:35:43","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T19:35:43","slug":"september-engineering-e-newsletter-faculty-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/september-engineering-e-newsletter-faculty-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Davidson Becomes New Chair of Geology and Geological Engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_31298\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/september-engineering-e-newsletter-faculty-story\/greg-davidson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31298\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31298\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31298\" title=\"greg davidson\" src=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/greg-davidson-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/greg-davidson-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/greg-davidson-2048x1150.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/greg-davidson-580x326.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Gregg Davidson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 When Gregg Davidson joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engineering.olemiss.edu\/geology\/\">UM Department of Geology and Geological Engineering<\/a>, he was one of many new faculty looking to have immediate impact upon the direction of a program that at the time had experienced a large amount of turnover.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen years later, the department has grown from a modest size to one of the largest in the nation.\u00a0 And as its newest department chair, Davidson is looking to build on the solid foundation established by his predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Joel Kuszmaul did a fine job as chair, and the faculty would have been happy to have him continue,\u201d said Davidson, a graduate of Wheaton College and the University of Arizona. \u201cHe stepped down to focus on his research and to take on an associate dean role with the School of Engineering. I accepted the chair position after the department faculty asked me to take on the role, and I believe I have developed the skills to facilitate the corporate goals of the program.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Davidson\u2019s short- and long-term goals include expanding the instructional faculty to accommodate the department\u2019s record enrollments and expanding research opportunities for its graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Kuszmaul stepped down during a time of record undergraduate enrollment and brought us through our last accreditation review with commendation,\u201d Davidson said. \u201cHe will be a hard act to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davidson, who worked briefly as an environmental consultant before joining the UM faculty in 1996, turned down an offer at an internationally recognized program at New Mexico Tech in order to come to Ole Miss. He has had no regrets about his decision, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were personal and professional reasons for doing so,\u201d Davidson said. \u201cOn a personal level, Ole Miss was closer to family and had actual water flowing in stream channels (unlike the dry washes of NMT).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When not overseeing the G&amp; GE department, Davidson said he enjoys gardening and backpacking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy garden in late summer is the envy of the South Oaks neighborhood,\u201d he said. \u201cMy most recent backpacking trip was in the Wind River, Wyo., with my CME sophomore son, Kevin. The metamorphic rocks were stunning!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>School of Engineering administrators said they are anticipating the department\u2019s continued growth and success under Davidson\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregg and I have been colleagues for over 15 years and have seen the department grow from a modest size to its current, unprecedented size,\u201d Kuszmaul said. \u201cHis contributions to our leadership have been abundant during that growth.\u00a0 I am pleased that he has agreed to his new role of leadership and look forward to working with him as our department chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur undergraduate geological engineering program is now the largest in the nation,\u201d said Dean Alex Cheng. \u201cI am pleased that Dr. Davidson will continue the leadership with the momentum to bring the department to an even higher level of excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 When Gregg Davidson joined the UM Department of Geology and Geological Engineering, he was one of many new faculty looking to have immediate impact upon the direction of a program that at the time had experienced a large amount of turnover.
