OXFORD, Miss. As a reporter for The New York Times, Thomas
\nL. Friedman has circled the globe to cover oil-related
\nnews, conflict in the Middle East, the end of the Cold War
\nand the worldwide impact of terrorism. His Pulitzer
\nPrize-winning commentaries have provided the American
\npublic with straight talk and reliable information on
\npolitics and foreign policy.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nOn Wednesday, Oct. 3, Friedman brings his straight talk and
\nperspective to the University of Mississippi as the keynote
\nspeaker for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College
\n10th Anniversary Convocation at 7:30 p.m. in the Ford
\nCenter for the Performing Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe convocation is free and open to the public but is a
\nticketed event. A reception and book signing will follow.

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Friedman’s address will be an occasion to come together to
\nconsider the conditions and challenges of a world
\ndiminishing in size, tested by war and full of
\nopportunities,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, dean of
\nthe Honors College. “What he has to say is always
\ncompelling because it touches our hearts or our
\npocketbooks and sometimes both.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFriedman’s latest bestseller is “The World Is Flat: A Brief
\nHistory of the 21st Century” (FSG, 2005), which has been
\nacclaimed for its insight into globalization and how
\nlightning-swift advances in technology and communications
\nare transforming how we all live and work. The book also
\ndelves into the explosion of wealth in India and China, and
\nwhy it seems the rest of us must run even faster just to
\nstay in place. In 2005, “The World Is Flat” was given the
\nfirst Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of
\nthe Year Award, and Friedman was named one of America’s
\nBest Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Friedman’s visit is a spectacular opportunity to listen
\nand dialogue with an individual who has shaped public
\ndebate on pressing international issues dealing with the
\nMiddle East and the ever-present global market that touches
\neach and every one of us,” Sullivan-Gonzalez said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFriedman graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University
\nwith a degree in Mediterranean studies and received a
\nmaster’s degree in modern Middle East studies from Oxford.
\nHe has served as a visiting professor at Harvard University
\nand has been awarded honorary degrees from several U.S.
\nuniversities. He lives in Bethesda, Md., with his wife,
\nAnn, and their two daughters.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Hosting a speaker like Thomas Friedman someone who has
\nshaped what we know and how we understand it speaks
\nvolumes about how far we have come in these first 10 years,
\nand it’s an exciting, challenging start to the next 10,”
\nsaid Debra Young, assistant dean of the Honors College.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther celebratory events include a birthday party at 10
\na.m. Oct. 4 at on the back deck of the Honors College.
\nSpeakers include Jim Barksdale, Chancellor Robert Khayat
\nand Sullivan-Gonzalez. Refreshments will be served.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
