OXFORD, Miss. – Entrepreneur Russell French has pledged
\n$25,000 to seed The 512 Ole Miss First Scholarship at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nFrench, a New Albany native, is an alumnus of UM’s hotel
\nrestaurant management program. He owns 208 restaurant in
\nOxford, which he opened in 2002. He also recently purchased
\nthe Oliver-Britt House, one of the city’s first
\nbed-and-breakfast operations, with plans to renovate and
\nreopen it. Once open, the new bed-and-breakfast inn and
\nrestaurant will be called The 512.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFrench said he was motivated to create this scholarship
\nbecause he wanted to give back to Ole Miss students, who
\nare such a vital part of the Oxford community.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Investing in students is beneficial to this town,” French
\nsaid. “Ole Miss students make up a large part of Oxford’s
\npopulation and support our local businesses. As a business
\nowner, I’m grateful for their patronage. I wanted to give
\nsomething back to them as a thank you.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFrench also said he would encourage other local business
\nowners to follow his lead. “I’m excited to be one of the
\nfirst business owners on board with Ole Miss First, and I
\nwould love to see other Oxford businesses jump right in and
\ncreate more scholarships and opportunities,” French said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nChancellor Robert Khayat said he is grateful for French’s
\ngift and for his leadership in the community.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Russell French is and always has been a strong supporter
\nof the university,” Khayat said. “We are profoundly
\ngrateful for this generous gift. And as a university, we
\nare fortunate to have such a wonderful and mutually
\nbeneficial relationship with our town and its residents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nKhayat began the Ole Miss First initiative as a bold new
\nway to address the university’s most critical need,
\nscholarships. Ole Miss First scholarships are unique in
\nthat donors are encouraged to mentor the recipient
\nthroughout his or her tenure at the university.
