OXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi track star Rodney
\nLydale Lockhart was found dead around 10 a.m. Saturday
\n(Sept. 29) at his apartment at Taylor Pointe Apartments in
\nOxford, near the UM campus.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nLockhart, 20, a junior psychology major from Vaiden, was a
\nmember of the gold medal-winning U.S. 4×400 relay team in
\nthe 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are deeply saddened by Rodney’s death,” said UM Head
\nTrack Coach Joe Walker. “Our thoughts and prayers are with
\nRodney’s family and friends. Our coaches and our
\nstudent-athletes offer our deepest sympathy to his family.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nLockhart was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene by
\nLafayette County Coroner Lonnie Weaver, according to a
\nrelease issued earlier today by Oxford Police Chief Mike
\nMartin.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nLockhart’s death is being investigated as a homicide by the
\nOxford Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of
\nInvestigations, Martin said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“This is an unbelievable thing, and I’m having difficulty
\nprocessing it,” Walker said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nTo help Ole Miss track athletes and coaches deal with the
\ntragedy, Dean of Students Thomas J. “Sparky” Reardon and
\nUniversity Counseling Center Director Mark Showalter met
\nwith the team Saturday evening.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAt the 2006 SEC Outdoor Championships, Lockhart finished
\nninth in the 400 meters and was a member of the 4×400-meter
\nrelay team that finished eighth. At the 2006 SEC Indoor
\nChampionships, he finished eighth in the 400 meters and was
\na member of the 4×400-meter relay team that finished
\nfifth.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAt the McCravy Memorial, Lockhart was the top collegiate
\nfinisher in the 400 meters, posting a time of 47.70.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We had a great team, and we were going to have a great
\nyear,” said Associate Men’s Track Coach Brian O’Neal. “We
\nhad high goals, and Lockhart was an integral part of them.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOPD officers and an ambulance were dispatched to Taylor
\nPointe Apartments shortly after 10 a.m., following a 911
\ncall from a male who stated he entered Lockhart’s apartment
\nand found him lying on the floor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nLockhart is the son of Ronnie and Clarissa Lockhart of
\nVaiden. Arrangements are pending.
