\nOXFORD, Miss. – John Hodges, a published fiction writer
\nenrolled in the University of Mississippi’s acclaimed
\nMaster of Fine Arts in creative writing program, has been
\nawarded a $3,000 scholarship by the university’s MFA
\ncommittee.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nPhilanthropist Jim Barksdale funded the scholarship as part
\nof his support for the program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This award assists the Department of English to continue
\nits progress toward excellence in the delivery of its
\ndegrees,” said Patrick Quinn, department chair. “Thanks to
\nour generous benefactors, we are proud of our high-rated
\nMFA program and the professors who make Ole Miss a top
\nchoice for graduate education.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am deeply honored by the award,” said Hodges, of Florida
\nand Alaska. “The many writers and outstanding teachers of
\nOxford have, in the short time that I have been here,
\noffered so much support and inspiration. I greatly value
\ntheir dedication and friendship.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHodges’ short stories have appeared in more than a dozen
\nprint journals, including American Short Fiction, The
\nChattachoochie Review and Iron Horse Literary Review. His
\nstory “Crying Babies in Heaven” was nominated for a
\nPushcart Prize.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs a photographer, he participated in Light Work’s
\nartist-in-residence program. His photographs have appeared
\nwidely and can be seen in the current issue of
\nfstopmagazine.com. His poem “The Teller on the Right” is
\nslated to appear in Rattle, a biannual poetry journal, in
\nDecember.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHodges received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from
\nFlorida State University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe MFA program in creative writing recently has been
\nlisted by The Atlantic Monthly magazine as one of the top
\nfive up-and-coming writing programs in the nation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We must rely on donors to be truly excellent,” said Barry
\nHannah, director of the MFA program. “We are lucky for
\nBarksdale and John and Renee Grisham, our angels and
\nstone-fine, stand-up people.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
