OXFORD, Miss. – A symposium honoring the work of
\nprize-winning journalist and author David Halberstam is set
\nfor Friday, Oct. 12, at the Overby Center for Southern
\nJournalism and Politics.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nThe 11 a.m. event in the Overby Center Auditorium, Room147,
\nconcludes Journalism Week at the University of Mississippi.
\nIt is free and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe symposium is held in tandem with a 6:30 p.m. reception
\nand dinner Thursday, Oct. 11, for the David Halberstam
\nEndowment Fund to benefit Teach for America-Mississippi
\nDelta. Tickets for the event, to be held in UM’s Paul B.
\nJohnson Commons Ballroom, are $125 per person and available

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nTeach for America is a national corps of recent college
\ngraduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural
\npublic schools. The program has been ongoing in the
\nMississippi Delta since 1991.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFriday’s symposium is to include recollections by prominent
\nMississippians and friends of Halberstam’s, including
\nformer Gov. William Winter, former Boston Red Sox pitcher
\nDave “Boo” Ferriss, plus journalists Julia Reed, Bill Minor
\nand Jerry Mitchell. Halberstam’s longtime colleague John
\nSeigenthaler, chairman emeritus of The (Nashville)
\nTennessean and founder of the First Amendment Center at
\nVanderbilt University, is slated to participate.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We look forward to paying tribute to one of the great
\njournalists of our era. The South provided David with his
\nfirst platform for journalistic excellence,” said Charles
\nL. Overby, chairman of the center and former executive
\neditor of The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger. After Halberstam’s
\ndeath in an automobile accident in California in April, his
\nfamily designated Teach for America-Mississippi Delta as
\ntheir choice for memorial gifts. His daughter, Julia
\nHalberstam, taught in the program in Greenville from 2002
\nto 2004 and is slated to speak at the dinner. Halberstam’s
\nwidow, Jean, plans to attend all the events.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“It seems only fitting that the David Halberstam Endowment
\nFund for Teach for America is launched at Ole Miss in
\nconjunction with the Overby Center’s tribute to David,”
\nsaid Ron Nurnberg, executive director for Teach for
\nAmerica-Mississippi Delta.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are humbled by the Halberstam family’s decision to name
\nTeach for America in the Delta as a way for friends, family
\nand admirers of David’s work to honor his memory and to
\nperpetuate his passions for equity and education.
\nMississippi as a whole and the children of the Delta in
\nparticular will benefit immensely.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBecause of the support already demonstrated, Nurnberg
\nanticipates that the endowment will reach at least $5
\nmillion and provide funds for more than 40 additional
\nteachers in the program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBecause of the long relationship between Halberstam and
\nMississippi – which included many visits to Oxford as well
\nas delivering the 2005 commencement address at Ole Miss –
\nMayor Richard Howorth and the city’s Board of Alderman have
\ndeclared Oct. 12 “David Halberstam Day” in Oxford. The
\ndeclaration notes that Halberstam “came to us a stranger,
\nwanting Mississippi to succeed in good and noble ways, and
\nbecame our friend.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHalberstam also is to be remembered during the Oct. 11
\nThacker Mountain Radio Show with remarks by Julia Reed, a
\nGreenville native whose work appears regularly in Vogue and
\nother national magazines. The weekly program, broadcast
\nfrom Off Square Books in downtown Oxford has a statewide
\naudience.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA 1955 graduate of Harvard University, Halberstam entered
\nthe newspaper business as a reporter at the Daily Times
\nLeader in West Point. He later worked at The Tennessean,
\nbefore moving on to The New York Times in the mid-1960s.
\nHalberstam won a Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his reporting
\nof the early stages of the Vietnam War for The Times. He
\nlater wrote for Harper’s magazine during the period when
\nthe late Willie Morris, a Mississippian, served as editor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFollowing the success of his best-selling 1973 book, “The
\nBest and the Brightest,” which detailed the flaws in
\ngovernment planning of the Vietnam War, Halberstam devoted
\nhis career to books. He wrote of wars, civil rights,
\njournalism and industry, yet some of his most popular books
\ndealt with sports, such as “The Teammates,” an affectionate
\naccount of aging Red Sox players, including “Boo” Ferriss,
\nwho later became baseball coach at Delta State University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHis last book, “The Coldest Winter,” published posthumously
\nin September, is an account of the Korean War.
