UM photo by Robert Jordan.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; A symposium honoring the work of<br \/>\nprize-winning journalist and author David Halberstam is set<br \/>\nfor Friday, Oct. 12, at the Overby Center for Southern<br \/>\nJournalism and Politics.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The 11 a.m. event in the Overby Center Auditorium, Room147,<br \/>\nconcludes Journalism Week at the University of Mississippi.<br \/>\nIt is free and open to the public.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The symposium is held in tandem with a 6:30 p.m. reception<br \/>\nand dinner Thursday, Oct. 11, for the David Halberstam<br \/>\nEndowment Fund to benefit Teach for America-Mississippi<br \/>\nDelta. Tickets for the event, to be held in UM&#8217;s Paul B.<br \/>\nJohnson Commons Ballroom, are $125 per person and available<br \/>\nby contacting Ron Nurnberg, Teach for America at<br \/>\n662-234-6206, ext. 266, or<br \/>\nron.nurnberg@teachforamerica.org.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Teach for America is a national corps of recent college<br \/>\ngraduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural<br \/>\npublic schools. The program has been ongoing in the<br \/>\nMississippi Delta since 1991.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Friday&#8217;s symposium is to include recollections by prominent<br \/>\nMississippians and friends of Halberstam&#8217;s, including<br \/>\nformer Gov. William Winter, former Boston Red Sox pitcher<br \/>\nDave &#8220;Boo&#8221; Ferriss, plus journalists Julia Reed, Bill Minor<br \/>\nand Jerry Mitchell. Halberstam&#8217;s longtime colleague John<br \/>\nSeigenthaler, chairman emeritus of The (Nashville)<br \/>\nTennessean and founder of the First Amendment Center at<br \/>\nVanderbilt University, is slated to participate.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We look forward to paying tribute to one of the great<br \/>\njournalists of our era. The South provided David with his<br \/>\nfirst platform for journalistic excellence,&#8221; said Charles<br \/>\nL. Overby, chairman of the center and former executive<br \/>\neditor of The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger. After Halberstam&#8217;s<br \/>\ndeath in an automobile accident in California in April, his<br \/>\nfamily designated Teach for America-Mississippi Delta as<br \/>\ntheir choice for memorial gifts. His daughter, Julia<br \/>\nHalberstam, taught in the program in Greenville from 2002<br \/>\nto 2004 and is slated to speak at the dinner. Halberstam&#8217;s<br \/>\nwidow, Jean, plans to attend all the events.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It seems only fitting that the David Halberstam Endowment<br \/>\nFund for Teach for America is launched at Ole Miss in<br \/>\nconjunction with the Overby Center&#8217;s tribute to David,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Ron Nurnberg, executive director for Teach for<br \/>\nAmerica-Mississippi Delta.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We are humbled by the Halberstam family&#8217;s decision to name<br \/>\nTeach for America in the Delta as a way for friends, family<br \/>\nand admirers of David&#8217;s work to honor his memory and to<br \/>\nperpetuate his passions for equity and education.<br \/>\nMississippi as a whole and the children of the Delta in<br \/>\nparticular will benefit immensely.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Because of the support already demonstrated, Nurnberg<br \/>\nanticipates that the endowment will reach at least $5<br \/>\nmillion and provide funds for more than 40 additional<br \/>\nteachers in the program.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Because of the long relationship between Halberstam and<br \/>\nMississippi &#8211; which included many visits to Oxford as well<br \/>\nas delivering the 2005 commencement address at Ole Miss &#8211;<br \/>\nMayor Richard Howorth and the city&#8217;s Board of Alderman have<br \/>\ndeclared Oct. 12 &#8220;David Halberstam Day&#8221; in Oxford. The<br \/>\ndeclaration notes that Halberstam &#8220;came to us a stranger,<br \/>\nwanting Mississippi to succeed in good and noble ways, and<br \/>\nbecame our friend.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Halberstam also is to be remembered during the Oct. 11<br \/>\nThacker Mountain Radio Show with remarks by Julia Reed, a<br \/>\nGreenville native whose work appears regularly in Vogue and<br \/>\nother national magazines. The weekly program, broadcast<br \/>\nfrom Off Square Books in downtown Oxford has a statewide<br \/>\naudience.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>A 1955 graduate of Harvard University, Halberstam entered<br \/>\nthe newspaper business as a reporter at the Daily Times<br \/>\nLeader in West Point. He later worked at The Tennessean,<br \/>\nbefore moving on to The New York Times in the mid-1960s.<br \/>\nHalberstam won a Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his reporting<br \/>\nof the early stages of the Vietnam War for The Times. He<br \/>\nlater wrote for Harper&#8217;s magazine during the period when<br \/>\nthe late Willie Morris, a Mississippian, served as editor.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Following the success of his best-selling 1973 book, &#8220;The<br \/>\nBest and the Brightest,&#8221; which detailed the flaws in<br \/>\ngovernment planning of the Vietnam War, Halberstam devoted<br \/>\nhis career to books. He wrote of wars, civil rights,<br \/>\njournalism and industry, yet some of his most popular books<br \/>\ndealt with sports, such as &#8220;The Teammates,&#8221; an affectionate<br \/>\naccount of aging Red Sox players, including &#8220;Boo&#8221; Ferriss,<br \/>\nwho later became baseball coach at Delta State University.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>His last book, &#8220;The Coldest Winter,&#8221; published posthumously<br \/>\nin September, is an account of the Korean War.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For assistance related to a disability, call 662-915-7236.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 David Halberstam, legendary journalist, author and historian delivers the University of Mississippi commencement address May 14, 2005 in the Grove.
