OXFORD, Miss. – Musical and dramatic performer Claudia
\nStevens presents the one-person drama “Dreadfully Sorry,
\nGuys” Friday (Oct. 5) at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nScheduled for 7 p.m. in Nutt Auditorium of Scruggs Hall,
\nthe program is free and open to the public. However,
\ndonations are encouraged to benefit the Sarah Isom Center
\nfor Women and Gender Studies and the Gay-Straight Alliance
\nDiversity Award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWritten by Stevens in reaction to the 1999 California
\nmurder of her friend Gary Matson and his partner, the play
\noffers a reflection on lost culture and diversity. It
\npremiered in 2005 at the Cornelia Street Cabaret in New
\nYork City.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe event marks the third time in recent years that Stevens
\nhas performed on the Oxford campus, including last
\nNovember, when she presented the acclaimed musical drama
\n“An Evening with Madame F.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The Sarah Isom Center is delighted to have invited Claudia
\nStevens back to perform a fundraiser for us,” said Mary
\nCarruth, director. “She is an artist who advocates for
\nsocial justice but not at all in a pedantic way. Her pieces
\nare rich and resonant, and her piano-playing is
\nexceptional.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCo-sponsors are the Isom Center, University Lecture Series,
\nMulticultural Affairs and the departments of Music and
\nTheatre Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCritiquing Stevens’ recent performance of the show in the
\nBaltimore area, a writer for the Baltimore Sun said,
\n“Performance artist Claudia Stevens is adept at using the
\nunlikely to unearth unexpected truths.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe daughter of Holocaust survivors, Stevens has earned a
\nsignificant place in the emerging field of performance art.
\nA classical concert pianist and composer, she has presented
\nconcerts at Carnegie Recital Hall and has been the featured
\nartist on “Performance Today on NPR.” She has recorded for
\nand published compositions in Perspectives of New Music.
