Photo by Kurt Byers\/University of Alaska.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Ray Highsmith got a big surprise recently<br \/>\nwhen he returned to Kasitsna Bay, Alaska, for an open house<br \/>\ncelebrating the grand reopening of a laboratory he directed<br \/>\nfor more than 20 years. They named the renovated facility<br \/>\nin his honor.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Highsmith, executive director of the National Institute for<br \/>\nUndersea Science and Technology and director of the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi Field Station, was honored for<br \/>\nestablishing university research and teaching programs at<br \/>\nthe lab and helping raise more than $12 million for<br \/>\nimprovements as the facility&#8217;s operations director from<br \/>\n1983 to 2005.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The facility, on Alaska&#8217;s Kenai Penisula, was renamed the<br \/>\nDr. Raymond C. Highsmith Laboratory. Highsmith cut the<br \/>\nribbon (made of sea kelp) for the renovated facility as<br \/>\nabout 130 people cheered.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I was surprised and honored,&#8221; Highsmith said. &#8220;Seeing this<br \/>\nwonderful new facility, after so many years of hard work<br \/>\neven just to survive, really is a dream come true and<br \/>\nshould benefit students, teachers and researchers for<br \/>\ndecades to come.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Kasitsna Bay Laboratory is owned by the National<br \/>\nOceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s National Centers<br \/>\nfor Coastal Ocean Science and operated in partnership with<br \/>\nthe School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Alaska Fairbanks.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The upgraded complex includes a 48-person dormitory and<br \/>\nbunkhouse, scuba locker, shop, classrooms and a<br \/>\n5,000-square-foot laboratory building with five dry labs<br \/>\nand a 1,400-square-foot wet lab.
