\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi fraternity has
\nbeen sanctioned after an inquiry determined the group
\nprovided alcohol to some of its members and guests the
\nnight a student fell from a tree and died.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Office of the Dean of Students found that members of
\nBeta Theta Pi violated the university’s alcohol policy by
\nproviding a common source of alcohol, distributing alcohol,
\nlacking organizational control of alcohol and using chapter
\nfunds to purchase alcohol.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring the course of the inquiry, it also was determined
\nthat the chapter misled university officials by denying the
\npresence of alcohol at the chapter house and withheld
\nadditional information during initial stages of the
\ninquiry. Consequently they also have been charged with
\ndisregard of university authority.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

The following sanctions have been imposed against the
\nfraternity:<\/p>\n

  • Probation through December 2008 under the
    \nuniversity’s two-strike alcohol policy<\/li>\n
  • 400 hours
    \nof community service<\/li>\n
  • Social probation (no on- or
    \noff-campus social events) for the ’07-08 academic year<\/li>\n
  • $1,000 fine or coordination of a campuswide alcohol
    \neducation program<\/li>\n
  • The chapter must participate in
    \nan alcohol education program<\/li>\n
  • The chapter must
    \nparticipate in an ethical development education
    \nprogram<\/li>\n
  • The general fraternity will conduct a
    \nchapter review of all members and officers<\/p>\n

    \nThe campus inquiry into the violations was initiated after
    \n18-year-old Bradley Jameson of Fort Worth, Texas, who was
    \nnot a member of the fraternity, fell 12 feet after a tree
    \nlimb broke as he was retrieving a football in the backyard
    \nof the fraternity house in the early morning hours of Sept.
    \n15.\n<\/p>\n

    \nBeta Theta Pi headquarters officials indicate they plan to
    \nissue further sanctions later this week.\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
