\nOXFORD, Miss. – National, regional and local industry
\nleaders are slated to make presentations to students at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi during annual fall Journalism
\nWeek Oct. 8-12.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nMore than two dozen experts will examine such topics as
\n“The Future of Broadcast,” “Journalism: Is It for Me?” and
\n“Everyone Needs a Little P.R.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe public is invited to attend the sessions at no charge.

\nSamir Husni, journalism chair, said events during the week
\noffer attendees an opportunity to learn about a variety of
\ntopics, from covering the courts and the military to
\nlaunching magazines and blogging.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The beauty of what we do is to provide our students with
\nthe basics,” Husni said. “Bringing someone in from the
\noutside and listening to their successes really helps
\nstudents understand that the light at the end of the tunnel
\nis not a train coming at them.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe week concludes at 11 a.m. Friday (Oct. 12) with a
\nsymposium honoring the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning
\njournalist and author David Halberstam. The free, public
\nsymposium is to be held in the new Overby Center for
\nSouthern Journalism and Politics, Room 147, located
\nadjacent to Farley Hall, home of the journalism
\ndepartment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMississippi professionals planning to participate in
\nJournalism Week include Ronnie Agnew, executive editor of
\nThe (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger, and Parrish Alford, reporter
\nfor the Northeast Daily Journal (Tupelo). They are to be
\njoined by nationally known leaders, including David Carey,
\nvice president and publisher of Conde Nast Portfolio
\nmagazine.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We’re also expecting Ed Brown, CEO and founding editor,
\nand Mitch Powers, president and publisher, of GX magazine;
\nand Celine Gumbiner, CEO and co-founder of Bee Women
\nMagazine,” Husni said. “Journalism Week is a great
\nopportunity (for students) to build business relationships
\nwith thriving journalists. No matter how good you are, no
\nmatter how much you know, it’s all about getting people to
\nknow you. Journalism Week is an essential step in getting a
\njob and provides a great opportunity to meet with people
\nwho could get you a job after college.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJunior journalism major Aly Hanson agreed. “As a freshman,
\nI found it difficult to remember there is a light at the
\nend of this college tunnel, and my required math class was
\na mere stepping stone in the path of earning my journalism
\ndegree.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It wasn’t until I attended Journalism Week when I
\nrediscovered my passion for journalism. Hearing
\ntestimonies of tough times and many successes from the
\njournalists who spoke that week inspired many to get back
\non track and aspire to be a successful journalist one day,
\ntoo,” said Hanson, native of The Woodlands, Texas.
