\nOXFORD, Miss. A University of Mississippi graduate
\ninstructor in English has received an award recognizing him
\nas an outstanding teacher of freshmen.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nTravis Montgomery, a native of Tecumseh, Okla., is the
\nfourth recipient of the annual Lawrence “Shaky” Yates Award
\nfor Best Teacher of Freshman English. The honor includes a
\n$600 prize.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“When you’re a freshman, you’re trying to get used to the
\nuniversity environment, the new requirements, learning the
\nnew expectations, and this requires taking a new attitude
\ntoward revising papers,” said Montgomery. “I try to help
\nstudents write clear thesis statements and organize
\nparagraphs effectively. I feel that if students can leave
\nmy class and revise papers well, then I have succeeded.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPatrick Quinn, chair of the English department, said that
\nMontgomery is a young man who has a love and dedication for
\nthe English language.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“He really cares about the language and realizes how
\nimportant it is in today’s world,” Quinn said. “He wants
\nhis students to have a firm grasp of the language, giving
\nthem the confidence to go forward in whatever section of
\nthe world they choose. I think it is rare to find someone
\nthis strongly dedicated to his students, and this is why
\nTravis won this year’s award. ”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nYates, who taught English at Ole Miss from 1946 to 1953,
\nwas notorious for his strict teaching principles. The award
\nwas created in 2004 by UM alumnus Carl Odom of Hattiesburg
\nand his wife, Jeanine Sheats Odom. Yates taught Odom
\nfreshman English in 1949. Odom graduated in 1953 with a
\nbachelor’s degree in psychology.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We listen to a great deal of student feedback before we
\nmake any decision about the award,” said Quinn. “Last
\nyear, I had several students tell me Travis had many good
\nideas which excited them about writing, and comments like
\nthis aid in the decision-making process.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s nice to receive awards like this, but I don’t deserve
\none more than other instructors here,” Montgomery said. “We
\nall help each other devise assignments or classroom
\nstrategies, and we often ask each other for advice. So I
\nguess if we receive awards like these, then we should
\nacknowledge our colleagues.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMontgomery received a bachelor’s degree in English from
\nOklahoma Christian University in 2002. He then received a
\nmaster’s from the University of Mississippi in 2004 before
\nenrolling in the graduate program. He has taught freshman
\ncomposition courses, as well as several advanced English
\ncourses. His dissertation discusses Edgar Allan Poe and
\nOrientalism, examining the Middle Eastern influence on
\nPoe’s writings.
