{"id":327,"date":"2007-10-09T11:07:35","date_gmt":"2007-10-09T16:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=327"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:25:29","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:25:29","slug":"voodoo-spirituality-to-be-discussed-in-lecture-by-anthropologist-oct-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/voodoo-spirituality-to-be-discussed-in-lecture-by-anthropologist-oct-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Voodoo, Spirituality to be Discussed in Lecture by Anthropologist Oct. 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss.- A research anthropologist who successfully<br \/>\nblends unlikely topics delivers the address &#8220;Do That Voodoo<br \/>\nYou Do So Well: New Interpretations of an Old Spirituality&#8221;<br \/>\nTuesday (Oct.9) at the University of Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Martha Ward, research professor of anthropology and urban<br \/>\nstudies at the University of New Orleans, speaks at 5:30<br \/>\np.m. in Bryant Hall, Room 209. The free, public event is to<br \/>\nbe preceded by a reception and book signing.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Ward said that her &#8220;new interpretations center on seeing<br \/>\nVoodoo as women&#8217;s benevolent and caring and spiritual<br \/>\nresponses to slavery, high mortality of particularly<br \/>\ninfants and children, epidemic diseases, bad local<br \/>\ngovernment and massive social suffering.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Making Voodoo into something evil and black magic was the<br \/>\nauthorities&#8217; and exclusively white male way of trying to<br \/>\ncontrol the free women of color who led the orders and to<br \/>\nsuppress the Creole culture, which gave the world jazz,<br \/>\nincredible cuisine, beautiful architecture, assertive and<br \/>\npolitically active women, a flexible racial alternative to<br \/>\nAmerican apartheid and stunning pastries,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Ward&#8217;s projects include field research on anti-racism<br \/>\norganizations and urban shamanism. As a result, she<br \/>\ncombined the topics of women&#8217;s lives, race and<br \/>\nmagico-medical religions into her book &#8220;Voodoo Queen: The<br \/>\nSpirited Lives of Marie Laveau&#8221; (University Press of<br \/>\nMississippi, 2004).<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Ward&#8217;s upcoming lecture is being presented under the<br \/>\nauspices of the Lucy Somerville Howorth Lecture series in<br \/>\nthe Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies and the<br \/>\nWilliam Hal Furr Dialogue on Philosophy and Religion in the<br \/>\nDepartment of Philosophy and Religion. It is also<br \/>\nco-sponsored by the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors<br \/>\nCollege.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Dr. Ward, a former colleague of mine and New Orleans<br \/>\nneighbor, is an engaging speaker,&#8221; said Mary Carruth, Isom<br \/>\nCenter director. &#8220;I&#8217;m delighted that her eclectic interests<br \/>\nprovide an occasion for cross-disciplinary dialogue.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>A world traveler, Ward has conducted research in such<br \/>\nplaces as the Tirol in the European Alps, China and the<br \/>\nPacific islands of Micronesia. While working with UNO&#8217;s<br \/>\ninternational studies program, she taught in Austria, then<br \/>\nfounded and for a number of years directed a field school<br \/>\nin cultural anthropology at Brunnenburg Castle in the<br \/>\nGerman-Speaking area of northern Italy.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>She has worked with the Social Science Research Council,<br \/>\nWorld Health Organization, National Institutes of Health<br \/>\nand Wenner-Gren Foundation.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Explaining her latest work, Ward said, &#8220;The combined<br \/>\nexperiences of traveling, research and teaching have<br \/>\ninspired me to a new project, a personal ethnography or<br \/>\nethno-autobiographical narrative with an assortment of<br \/>\ntitles &#8220;How I Got to be White&#8221; or &#8220;Confederate Daughters<br \/>\nand Voodoo Queens.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The annual Lucy Somerville Howorth Lecture Series honors<br \/>\npublic servant Lucy Somerville Howorth and bring to campus<br \/>\ndistinguished speakers in women&#8217;s studies. A graduate of<br \/>\nthe UM law school, Howorth achieved national prominence<br \/>\nduring her long career in public service, including her<br \/>\nenthusiastic support for women&#8217;s rights. A native of<br \/>\nCleveland, she died in 1997 at age 102.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The William Hal Furr Dialogue on Philosophy and Religion<br \/>\nwas established by the family of William Hal Furr following<br \/>\nhis death in 1974.
