\nMichael L. Harrington\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\nOXFORD, Miss. – Michael Louis Harrington of Oxford, retired
\nUniversity of Mississippi professor and administrator,
\npassed away this week while visiting in Portland, Ore.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHarrington, 63, was born in Portland. He joined the Ole
\nMiss faculty as assistant professor of philosophy in 1970
\nand retired last year as professor emeritus. He served as
\nchairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religion from
\n1999 to 2005.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. Tuesday in
\nParis-Yates Chapel. A reception is to follow at the
\nHarrington home, 217 Colonial Road. Arrangements are being
\nhandled by Coleman Funeral Home in Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM faculty and staff fondly remember Harrington as a
\ncolleague and friend.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n

“Mike Harrington was a much loved member of the university
\nfaculty and Oxford community,” said Chancellor Robert
\nKhayat. “He and his family have enhanced our lives in a
\nvariety of ways. The university mourns his loss and extends
\nour heartfelt sympathy to his wonderful family.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nGlenn Hopkins, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, said,
\n“Michael Harrington was an important part of this
\nuniversity for over 30 years. A dedicated and popular
\nteacher, he influenced generations of students, and, as an
\nadministrator, he led his department with good sense and an
\nunfailing dedication to improving the education of students
\nhere. This university is better because of him. He will be
\ngreatly missed, especially by those of us who knew him well
\nand were fortunate enough to call him friend.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBecause of Harrington’s leadership and vision, the
\nDepartment of Philosophy and Religion grew from fewer than
\nthree faculty members in the 1970s to its current eight
\nmembers, and is still growing, according to William F.
\nLawhead, department chair.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Michael had a love of ideas for their own sake, but he
\nalso was dedicated to making philosophy relevant to
\neveryday ethical concerns,” Lawhead said. “He disseminated
\nphilosophy not only in the classroom and in professional
\npapers, but in newspaper opinion pieces as well. I will
\nalways remember him for his engaging, wry wit. I could not
\ntalk to him very long without him making me laugh.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It was his humor and sense of philosophical perspective
\nthat kept him on top of his personal medical problems and
\nthat kept the rest of us on top of the challenges that
\nfaced the department over the years. He had a zest for
\nlife, but also a Socratic detachment that gave him a deep
\nsense of peace.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHarrington played an important role in the formation of the
\nUM’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Through his
\nwork on the Mississippi Humanities Council, he promoted the
\nhumanities across the state for many years.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA graduate of Davidson College, Harrington completed both
\nhis master’s and Ph.D. at Emory University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHarrington is survived by his wife, Mary Mathison
\nHarrington; two daughters, Elizabeth Harrington and Emily
\nHarrington; and two brothers, Peter Harrington of
\nWinston-Salem, N.C., and Lee Harrington of Washington,
\nD.C.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMemorials can be made to the Heifer Foundation or St. Jude
\nChildren’s Research Hospital.
