The Internet was alive and becoming more relevant, so we followed our counterparts posting stories to a web site. However, nearly everything posted online was a digital copy of something created for print or to be sent via email to outside print media.

Fast-forward eight years, and a lot has changed. Press releases are still the most effective way to get information to a national or international audience, and there is still nothing more satisfying for many PR professionals than to get a story into media like the New York Times. However, the New York Times is obviously not the best avenue to let people on campus know that there is a toy drive over the Christmas holidays. That is why the emergence of social media (and this blog) is so exciting for us. When we need to share information with you (our students, alumni, faculty/staff, football fans, etc.), we can do so directly and have a chance to get your honest feedback in return.

PR in 2014 means writing and distributing press releases, but it also means creating marketing plans with estimates and timelines for everything from posters and t-shirts to media pitches and social media strategies. In short, our jobs are equal parts public relations, marketing, online media, social media and media relations. You can see how we’ve translated our new role into creative modes of communication in any number of ways including our daily posts to Ole Miss News and this new Ole Miss News Blog. Check out http://olemissrebelspotlight.tumblr.com to see some creative videos promoting our social media channels.
