\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Tassels chapter of Mortar Board at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi is among 51 chapters nationwide
\nhonored with a Silver Torch Award for the 2006-07 academic
\nyear. The awards were presented recently at the
\norganization’s national conference.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“Mortar Board is much more than an honorary organization;
\nit is a group who realizes that they have been given much
\nand have decided through Mortar Board to give back to Ole
\nMiss and the Oxford community,” said Thomas J. “Sparky”
\nReardon, UM dean of students and Mortar Board faculty
\nadviser.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Silver Torch Award recognizes chapters for their
\ntimeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of
\nscholarship, leadership and service.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our Mortar Board chapter at Ole Miss has always attracted
\noutstanding students,” Reardon said. “Leaders like Scarlett
\nJones and Phillip Sandifer have done a great job, and the
\nmembership has been tireless in conducting projects that
\nbenefit the community.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMortar Board is a national honor society founded in 1918
\nthat recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement
\nin scholarship, leadership and service. The Tassels chapter
\nwas founded at Ole Miss in 1942.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMortar Board promotes service to colleges and universities
\nand encourages lifelong contributions to the global
\ncommunity. Some notable Mortar Board members include former
\nPresident Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
\nand former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
