\nOXFORD, Miss. – Hunting enthusiasts can join football
\nlegend Archie Manning in a quest to help his hometown of
\nDrew, and one lucky participant will win a duck hunting
\ntrip in the Mississippi Delta this winter with the CBS
\nSports commentator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe fundraiser, a collaboration with the Drew Chamber of
\nCommerce and the William Winter Institute for Racial
\nReconciliation at the University of Mississippi, supports
\nthe restoration of a historic school, which will become the
\npermanent home for the local Boys and Girls Club.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTickets are $100 each for the Nov. 3 drawing. They are
\navailable at the Drew Chamber of Commerce, 129 Shaw Ave.,
\nDrew, MS 38737, by calling 662-745-8975 or by e-mailing The
\nDrew Leader newspaper at drewleader@yahoo.com. All
\ndonations are tax-deductible.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe winner gets to join Manning in a hunt on a mutually
\nagreeable date at the Fighting Bayou Hunting Club, located
\n15 miles from Drew. The prize includes overnight
\naccommodations and breakfast for two at the lodge, plus a
\nkeepsake DVD documenting the event on film.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Winter Institute has been supporting the restoration
\nof Li’l Red school, a former Rosenwald school there, since
\n2001. It will be used for a community center once
\nrenovated,” said April Grayson, documentary educator at the
\nWinter Institute. “After initial funding of $400,000, we
\nhave secured funds totaling almost $200,000 from the
\nMississippi Department of Archives and History and the
\nMississippi Arts Commission. We must now secure matching
\nfunds to access those grants.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nManning, an Ole Miss football standout in 1968-70 and
\nformer star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, became
\ninvolved in the Drew restoration project through a
\nfortuitous series of events.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Archie and I grew up together and graduated from high
\nschool in 1967,” said Steve Shurden, executive director of
\nDrew Enterprises. “He and I had not been in contact very
\nmuch since then, but one day this year he called me up and
\nasked me whether or not we were having a 40th anniversary
\nclass reunion. Archie was the class president, so I
\nanswered, You tell me.'”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShurden said Manning had previously been contacted by the
\nDrew police chief about contributing to the downtown
\nrenovation efforts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Archie really wanted to do something to help find a
\npermanent location for our local Boys and Girls Club,”
\nShurden said. “He comes home about once a year to duck hunt
\nanyway, so I suggested he combine both the Boys and Girls
\nand Lil’ Red projects with one of his return visits. Of
\ncourse, he agreed and the rest is history.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJeff Andrews, another member of the Drew Chamber of
\nCommerce board of directors, said hopes are high that the
\nduck hunt will secure the $66,000 in matching funds needed
\nfor the Li’l Red renovation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We started the Boys and Girls Club over a year ago and had
\nmore than 100 kids participating,” Andrews said. “The
\nprogram needs a permanent facility, which is what Li’l Red
\nwould provide.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Lil Red project is a historic example of interracial
\ncooperation,” said Susan Glisson, director of the Winter
\nInstitute. “Even during the decades of segregation, whites
\nand blacks came together to educate black school children.
\nThis project reflects the interracial spirit and hope for
\nthe future.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
