\nOXFORD, Miss. – A team of three University of Mississippi
\ncomputer science majors is set to compete this weekend
\n(Oct. 12-13) in the 32nd International Collegiate
\nProgramming Contest, conducted by the Association for
\nComputing Machinery.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nUndergraduates Jason Boyd of Brookhaven and Brent Roth of
\nHendersonville, Tenn., and first-year graduate student
\nCourtney Humphries of Tremont are to represent Ole Miss
\nFriday and Saturday in the ICPC Southeast Regional contest
\nat the University of South Alabama. The IBM-sponsored
\n“battle of the brains” contest also includes teams from
\nAuburn University and the University of South Alabama.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther Southeast Regional competitions are to be held at the
\nFlorida Institute of Technology and Georgia Southern
\nUniversity. This year’s regionals are expected to attract
\nsome 6,100 university teams from 82 countries on six
\ncontinents, all vying for a spot in the World Finals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNinety teams, all winners of regional matchups, are to
\ncompete for awards, prizes, scholarships and bragging
\nrights April 8-12, 2008, in Banff Springs, Alberta, Canada.
\nWarsaw University of Poland won this year’s ICPC title in
\nTokyo.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Ole Miss computer programming team has been practicing
\nhard for the upcoming ACM regional competition,” said team
\ncoach Stephen Rice, assistant professor of computer and
\ninformation science. “We are looking forward to
\nparticipating in the event this year.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRice and Yixin Chen, assistant professor of computer and
\ninformation science, organized the Ole Miss Student
\nProgramming Contest in September to choose this year’s
\nteam. Fourteen students competed in the event, with the top
\nthree winning the right to represent the university at the
\nregionals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I was on the programming team last year, and we had some
\nissues with communication and teamwork,” Boyd said. “This
\nyear, we’re trying to work on a system that will allow us
\nto maximize our effectiveness and minimize frustration.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides representing the university, the competition allows
\nstudents to prove their professional skills, Roth said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This competition means a lot to me, because most people
\nlook at a computer science major’s resume trying to
\nascertain if that person can program,” he said. “This
\ncompetition shows that we can program and do it very well
\nunder pressure.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTeams of three students will be challenged to use their
\nprogramming skills, creativity and business sense to solve
\ncomplex, real-world problems under a grueling five-hour
\ndeadline.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Future innovation and value creation in our industry will
\ncome from the creativity of the next generation of
\nengineers and computer scientists,” said Douglas Heintzman,
\ndirector of strategy, IBM Software Group and Sponsorship
\nExecutive of the ICPC. “It is vital that we promote and
\nfocus on the pursuit of excellence in the field of
\ninformation technology.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
