\nOXFORD, Miss. – Join the University of Mississippi family
\nSunday (Oct. 14) to celebrate the choral works of
\ninternationally known composer and Mississippi native
\nWilliam Grant Still.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 4 p.m. concert at the Ford Center for the Performing
\nArts features the UM Concert Singers, Mississippi Symphony
\nOrchestra and choirs from Rust College and Delta State
\nUniversity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are very pleased to be a part of this statewide
\ncelebration of this great American composer. The
\ncollaboration of the UM concert singers, the choirs of Rust
\nCollege and Delta State University and the Mississippi
\nSymphony Orchestra will make this a truly special event,”
\nsaid Norm Easterbrook, director of the Ford Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTickets for the concert are $27, $24 and $12 for various
\nseating. Local high school and middle school students are
\ninvited to attend at no charge. Tickets are available at
\nthe UM Box Office in the Student Union or by calling the
\nbox office at 662-915-7411.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPart of a series of concerts across the state, the upcoming
\nperformance showcases the broad range of Still’s inspiring
\ncompositions, from his symphonic works to his arrangements
\nof spirituals. The Ford Center, Mississippi Arts Council,
\nNational Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces
\nInitiative and the Phil Hardin Foundation provided funding
\nfor the concert.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDonald Trott, director of choral music and associate
\nprofessor, said the tribute presents a rare opportunity for
\nthe Concert Singers to collaborate with the Mississippi
\nSymphony Orchestra and choirs from Delta State University
\nand Rust College.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A collaboration of this nature is quite gratifying as it
\npresents our singers with a unique musical experience,”
\nTrott said. “This program will feature the music of a
\nsingle composer, so the students and audience alike will
\nwalk away with a clear understanding of the style of music
\nStill composed.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile William Grant Still is best remembered for his
\nSymphony No. 1 “Afro-American,” he wrote more than 150
\ncompositions during his lifetime – a lifetime comprising
\nmany firsts in American history. In 1931, the Rochester
\nPhilharmonic Orchestra performed Symphony No. 1, making
\nStill the first African-American to have his symphony
\nperformed by a leading orchestra.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 1936, Still conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic
\nOrchestra, thus becoming the first African-American to
\nconduct a major American orchestra. In 1949, his opera
\n“Troubled Island” was performed by the New York City Opera
\nand became the first opera by an African-American to be
\nperformed by a major company. The Berlin Philharmonic
\nOrchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic
\nOrchestra and BBC Orchestra also performed Still’s works.
