\nOXFORD, Miss. – Student volunteers are being sought at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi for a Hurricane Katrina relief
\ntrip to Bay St. Louis Nov. 9-11.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“We hope that, through our service as University of
\nMississippi students, we can demonstrate how much we care
\nfor these people who have lost so much,” said Adam Wilson,
\ngraduate assistant to the Associated Student Body Volunteer
\nService Committee, which is coordinating the trip.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Lagniappe Church in Bay St. Louis is to be the home
\nbase for volunteers. The church has coordinated with the
\nBay St. Louis City Council to proclaim Saturday, Nov. 11,
\nas Beautify Bay St. Louis Day.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nVolunteers must fill out an application packet from the
\nDean of Students office, Student Union, Room 422. There is
\na $30 fee that pays for housing and meals on Saturday and
\nbreakfast on Sunday. Students will need to bring a health
\ninsurance card as well as their student ID to turn in the
\npacket, which is due by Nov. 1.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We hope to not only clean up the destruction from the
\nstorm, but also to comfort these individuals and help mend
\ntheir hearts and spirits,” Wilson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe committee helps students find volunteer opportunities
\nyear-round through the University of Mississippi Students
\nFacilitating Unity and Service In Our Neighborhoods – or
\nUMSFUSION – program. The program coordinates special
\nvolunteer events and puts students in contact with
\norganizations that have organized projects, as well as
\nhelps students develop ideas for their own projects, Wilson
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nASB member Alex Green said that community service is not
\nonly good for the community but also makes a person feel
\nbetter about themselves.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Community service truly makes you grateful for everything
\nyou have,” Green said. “When you help others, it creates a
\nsense of pride and goodwill that lasts, changing your
\nentire outlook on life.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are encouraging students to work hard while doing the
\ncommunity service, but also to listen if any of the
\nresidents want to share their stories. In this way, we
\nintend to bond together the university community with the
\ncommunity of Bay St. Louis and the statewide community.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Katrina Relief Trip is sponsored by Volunteer Services,
\nOffice of the Dean of Students and the ASB Volunteer
\nService Committee.
