\nOXFORD, Miss. — Paula Temple, professor of art, delivers
\nthe Liberal Arts Faculty Forum address at the University of
\nMississippi Tuesday (Oct. 16).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 4 p.m. program in the Tupelo Room at Barnard
\nObservatory is free and open to the public. Temple plans to
\ntake questions from the audience, and refreshments will be
\nserved.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nForum coordinator Jan Murray, associate dean of liberal
\narts and professor of art, said she is pleased that Temple
\naccepted the invitation to speak.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Professor Temple is a gifted painter, whose visual works
\ncommunicate boldly and hopefully about the nature of the
\nhuman condition,” Murray said. “She brings us a unique
\nperspective on the nexus between art and science.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring the forum, Temple is slated to exhibit her works
\nthat detail personal and serious health issues. One of her
\npaintings, titled “Visualizing a Detached Retina: An
\nIllustrated History of an Art and Science Collaboration,”
\ndocuments her own battle with retinal detachment, a serious
\neye disorder that can lead to vision loss or blindness if
\nnot treated, she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This series shows what a detached retina looks like as it
\nhappens,” Temple said. “It happened to me, and each piece
\nshows what my world looked like as I went through
\ntreatment. These are very realistic images.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTemple has also been involved with breast cancer awareness.
\nHer painting “Light, Grace and Spirit” captured top honors
\nin a national competition sponsored by the American Cancer
\nSociety and is displayed at the society’s headquarters in
\nAtlanta, Ga. One year after completing painting, Temple was
\ndiagnosed with breast cancer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Having artwork that shows others what’s going on for a
\nperson battling cancer is very personal and often more
\neffective than words,” said Temple, whose cancer is in
\nremission.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile going through treatment, Temple completed her latest
\nwork, “Lilly Oncology on Canvas,” for an international
\ncompetition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides showcasing her work during the forum, Temple said
\nshe plans to address protecting the integrity of one’s work
\nwhile allowing it to be used to help people with serious
\nhealth conditions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTemple, who joined UM’s art faculty in 1985, teaches
\ngraphic design, figure drawing and water color. She is an
\nexhibiting artist throughout the United States and the
\nEastern Caribbean, most recently at the West Clinic in
\nMemphis, Tenn. Temple has been a visiting artist in the
\nEastern Caribbean and artist-in-residence in Cortona,
\nItaly.
