\nOXFORD, Miss. — Alberto J. Mora, Wal-Mart vice president
\nand former general counsel for the U.S. Navy, presents the
\nSherman L. Muths Jr. Lecture Series in Law Thursday, Oct.
\n18, at the University of Mississippi School of Law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 4 p.m. lecture is to be presented in the William N.
\nEthridge Jr. Moot Court Room of the Lamar Law Center.
\nTitled “Weakening America: Use of Cruelty in the War on
\nTerror,” the program is free and open to the public, and a
\nreception will follow.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMora served as general counsel for the Department of the
\nNavy in Washington, D.C., from 2001 to 2005. As the chief
\nlegal officer and chief ethics officer of the U.S. Navy and
\nMarine Corps, Mora managed the Office of the General
\nCounsel.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile in this position, he openly opposed detainee abuse at
\nGuantanamo Bay, Cuba, and led an effort within the
\nDepartment of Defense to end coercive interrogation tactics
\nused by some military agencies. In May 2006, the John F.
\nKennedy Library Foundation honored Mora’s service as Navy
\nGeneral Counsel by awarding him the John F. Kennedy Profile
\nin Courage Award, recognizing his opposition to
\ngovernmental policies and practices permitting detainee
\nabuse.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMora is responsible for Wal-Mart’s legal affairs in Puerto
\nRico and other overseas retail markets, including China,
\nJapan, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, the United
\nKingdom and five Central American countries. His career
\ncombines extensive private sector experience with
\nsignificant public service in the legal, foreign policy and
\nnational security arenas. He earned his bachelor’s degree
\nwith honors from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and his
\nlaw degree from the University of Miami School of Law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Sherman L. Muths Jr. Lecture Series in Law was
\nestablished at the law school in 2000, with a gift from
\nSherman L. Muths Jr. and his wife, Celia Muths, of
\nGulfport. The purpose of the series is to bring a
\ndistinguished legal scholar to the law school annually to
\ndeliver a public lecture on practical aspects of the legal
\nprofession and to interact informally with students and
\nfaculty.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLaw Dean Samuel M. Davis said Mora is an excellent choice
\nfor the series.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“He has a wealth of experience, in both private practice
\nand public service, as head of huge teams of lawyers,
\nDavis said. “Moreover, he has Mississippi ties; during his
\nformative years, his father was a member of the UM Medical
\nCenter faculty, and he grew up in Jackson. Our students
\nwill learn a great deal from him about the practical
\naspects of public and private practice.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
