\nOXFORD, Miss. — Recruiters from Japanese car manufacturing
\njuggernaut Toyota met prospective employees at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Thursday (Oct. 11) during the
\nSchool of Engineerings annual Career Day.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nToyota Corporation was among 37 businesses and industries
\nmanning a 100-yard stretch of recruiting tables lining the
\nlobby of Carrier Hall from mid-morning to noon. The
\nrepresentatives were met by dozens of enthusiastic
\nundergraduate and graduate students from the schools six
\nengineering departments.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nProfessionally dressed and with resumes in hand, the
\nstudents sought to make favorable and lasting impressions
\nto gain the coveted interview they hope will result in job
\nopportunities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nToyota spokespersons said they were impressed with the Ole
\nMiss students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Several of the students Ive met have been strong in both
\ntheir academics and their internship and co-op
\nexperiences,” said Sandra Stratton, human resources talent
\nmanager for Toyota North America. “All of them have been
\nvery polite and hospitable. Their potential combined with
\nour expertise in technology translates into a win-win
\nsituation for everyone.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJohn Raymer, engineering manager for Toyotas Kentucky-based
\nmanufacturing plant, said the company is looking for people
\nwho are interested in helping the U.S. manufacturing base
\nimprove its technology in a high-cost environment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Students who have had co-op experience usually are ideal
\ncandidates for the firms engineer-in-training program,” he
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents meeting Toyota representatives seemed excited
\nabout making early connections that could lead to permanent
\nemployment once the companys Mississippi plant opens in
\n2009.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther businesses represented at the recruiting event
\nincluded Eaton Aerospace, Raytheon, Viking Range
\nCorporation, the Corps of Engineers and Memphis Light, Gas
\nand Water.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Career Day has given me a great chance to meet people
\nface-to-face as opposed to simply filing an application
\nonline,” said LaShonn Curry, a second-year computer science
\nmasters degree student from Clarksdale. “Just meeting these
\npeople makes me feel Im better prepared and closer to
\nfinding a job once I graduate.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile the event was especially planned for engineering
\nmajors, other students also were welcome.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I really appreciate the School of Engineering for gearing
\nthis Career Day toward those of us majoring in information
\ntechnology,” said Kasey Harris, a senior management
\ninformation science major from Columbus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs Toyota eyes possible employees, plans for the new Center
\nfor Manufacturing Excellence at UM continue. Consultant
\nDennis Cuneo has said that the centers creation is part of
\nthe states $30 million incentive package enticing Toyota to
\nMississippi. A major goal of the effort is to produce and
\nconnect a continuous pool of highly qualified graduates
\nlikely to be hired by Toyota, its suppliers and other
\nmanufacturers as engineers, accountants, business managers
\nand other professionals, Cuneo said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The number of companies participating in Career Day this
\nyear more than doubled from last year,” said Kai Fong Lee,
\ndean of engineering. “The combination of a higher demand
\nfor engineers coupled with Toyotas announced presence and
\ncommitment to its Mississippi operations has significantly
\nincreased the visibility of the university in general and
\nour engineering programs in particular.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nScott Kilpatrick, assistant to the dean of engineering for
\nrecruitment and scholarships, said he viewed the day as a
\ncomplete success.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is the largest group weve ever hosted for the
\nengineering career fair,” Kilpatrick said. “Hopefully our
\nstudents will be able to find post-graduation employment,
\ninternships or co-op opportunities. We also hope that these
\ncompanies are able to find the talent for which they are
\nlooking.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
