\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi has agreed to
\npartner with Holmes Community College to bring higher
\neducation to more Mississippians through a new UM regional
\nsite in Grenada.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe program, coordinated by the UM Division of Outreach and
\nContinuing Education, is set to begin in January, when
\nstudents enroll for the spring 2008 semester, at the
\nHolmes-Grenada Center campus. Initial offerings include
\ngraduate-level courses, with plans to add junior- and
\nsenior-level courses later.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe target audience is professional educators in Grenada
\nand surrounding counties who wish to complete master’s
\ndegrees in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in
\nelementary education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are committed to meeting the higher education needs of
\nour state – not only on the Ole Miss campus but by reaching
\nout to local communities,” UM Chancellor Robert Khayat
\nsaid. “We are grateful to President Glenn Boyce and his
\nstaff for the collaborative initiative.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new program is similar to offerings at the university’s
\nother regional campuses, said Tim Angle, UM assistant
\nprovost and director of the Division of Outreach.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The regional campus locations in Booneville, Southaven and
\nTupelo have given people in those areas a chance to
\ncomplete their college degrees in a way that is flexible
\nfor working adults,” Angle said. “We anticipate that the
\nUM-Grenada site will do the same for people in the north
\ncentral part of the state.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents enrolled in the program are to attend two
\ngraduate-level classes per week in the evenings at the
\nHolmes-Grenada Center. By following a specific course
\nrotation that includes summer sessions, participants can
\ncomplete their degrees in December 2008.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Division of Outreach is working with the UM School of
\nEducation to offer courses that will allow educators to
\nbecome school administrators through the master’s of
\neducational leadership program. Plans are being made to
\nadmit a cohort group into this program in summer 2008.
\nJunior-level course work for Holmes-Grenada students who
\nwant to complete a bachelor’s degree in education may begin
\nas soon as the 2008 fall semester.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am pleased that our initial focus is on the field of
\neducation and the important role this collaboration will
\nplay in putting more teachers in our classrooms,” Holmes
\nCommunity College President Glenn Boyce said. “This
\npartnership is a tremendous example of how collaborative
\nefforts between the community college system and the
\ninstitutions of higher learning can bring greater access
\nand opportunity to Mississippi’s residents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are very excited about what this will mean for students
\nin the northern part of our district, and we hope to have a
\nsignificant impact on nontraditional students who are
\nlooking for opportunity and access to either finish a
\nfour-year degree or change careers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nClasses at the UM-Grenada site are to be taught by School
\nof Education faculty, using a combination of live lectures,
\ndistance education via satellite and online courses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The bachelor’s degree program is a perfect fit for those
\nHolmes Community College graduates who want to complete
\ntheir junior- and senior-level courses, but may not be able
\nto drive the long distance or relocate to Oxford,” Angle
\nsaid. “We tailor these courses for nontraditional college
\nstudents so that they can work, care for their families and
\nremain active in their communities while working toward
\ncompleting their college degrees.”
