{"id":341,"date":"2007-10-15T12:06:31","date_gmt":"2007-10-15T17:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=341"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:25:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:25:28","slug":"um-teams-with-holmes-community-college-to-offer-education-classes-in-grenada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-teams-with-holmes-community-college-to-offer-education-classes-in-grenada\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Teams with Holmes Community College To Offer Education Classes in Grenada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; The University of Mississippi has agreed to<br \/>\npartner with Holmes Community College to bring higher<br \/>\neducation to more Mississippians through a new UM regional<br \/>\nsite in Grenada.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The program, coordinated by the UM Division of Outreach and<br \/>\nContinuing Education, is set to begin in January, when<br \/>\nstudents enroll for the spring 2008 semester, at the<br \/>\nHolmes-Grenada Center campus. Initial offerings include<br \/>\ngraduate-level courses, with plans to add junior- and<br \/>\nsenior-level courses later.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The target audience is professional educators in Grenada<br \/>\nand surrounding counties who wish to complete master&#8217;s<br \/>\ndegrees in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in<br \/>\nelementary education.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We are committed to meeting the higher education needs of<br \/>\nour state &#8211; not only on the Ole Miss campus but by reaching<br \/>\nout to local communities,&#8221; UM Chancellor Robert Khayat<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;We are grateful to President Glenn Boyce and his<br \/>\nstaff for the collaborative initiative.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The new program is similar to offerings at the university&#8217;s<br \/>\nother regional campuses, said Tim Angle, UM assistant<br \/>\nprovost and director of the Division of Outreach.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The regional campus locations in Booneville, Southaven and<br \/>\nTupelo have given people in those areas a chance to<br \/>\ncomplete their college degrees in a way that is flexible<br \/>\nfor working adults,&#8221; Angle said. &#8220;We anticipate that the<br \/>\nUM-Grenada site will do the same for people in the north<br \/>\ncentral part of the state.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Students enrolled in the program are to attend two<br \/>\ngraduate-level classes per week in the evenings at the<br \/>\nHolmes-Grenada Center. By following a specific course<br \/>\nrotation that includes summer sessions, participants can<br \/>\ncomplete their degrees in December 2008.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Division of Outreach is working with the UM School of<br \/>\nEducation to offer courses that will allow educators to<br \/>\nbecome school administrators through the master&#8217;s of<br \/>\neducational leadership program. Plans are being made to<br \/>\nadmit a cohort group into this program in summer 2008.<br \/>\nJunior-level course work for Holmes-Grenada students who<br \/>\nwant to complete a bachelor&#8217;s degree in education may begin<br \/>\nas soon as the 2008 fall semester.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I am pleased that our initial focus is on the field of<br \/>\neducation and the important role this collaboration will<br \/>\nplay in putting more teachers in our classrooms,&#8221; Holmes<br \/>\nCommunity College President Glenn Boyce said. &#8220;This<br \/>\npartnership is a tremendous example of how collaborative<br \/>\nefforts between the community college system and the<br \/>\ninstitutions of higher learning can bring greater access<br \/>\nand opportunity to Mississippi&#8217;s residents.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We are very excited about what this will mean for students<br \/>\nin the northern part of our district, and we hope to have a<br \/>\nsignificant impact on nontraditional students who are<br \/>\nlooking for opportunity and access to either finish a<br \/>\nfour-year degree or change careers.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Classes at the UM-Grenada site are to be taught by School<br \/>\nof Education faculty, using a combination of live lectures,<br \/>\ndistance education via satellite and online courses.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The bachelor&#8217;s degree program is a perfect fit for those<br \/>\nHolmes Community College graduates who want to complete<br \/>\ntheir junior- and senior-level courses, but may not be able<br \/>\nto drive the long distance or relocate to Oxford,&#8221;
