Named the 2014 Burnham Lecturer in Civil War History, Reardon plans to examine &#8220;Sorrow and Survival: Providing for the Families of Gettysburg\u2019s Soldier Dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John Neff, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwarcenter.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UM Center for Civil War Research<\/a>, praised Reardon as one of the foremost authorities on the military history of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReardon is an engaging and dynamic speaker,\u201d Neff said.\u00a0\u201cShe has a genuine passion for understanding the military history of the Civil War through its multi-faceted human dimensions. \u00a0She is a real treasure and we are very fortunate to have her on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reardon is the George Winfree Professor of American History at Pennsylvania State University. She is a military historian of the Civil War who incorporates political and social history into her research of military doctrine and training. She has published a number of works on Civil War military history, including the award winning\u00a0&#8220;Pickett&#8217;s Charge in History and Memory.&#8221; She is\u00a0working on a military history of the Civil War&#8217;s Eastern Theater, which will be published in the University of North Carolina Press&#8217; upcoming Littlefield Series.<\/p>\n<p>Each April, the Center for Civil War Research invites a distinguished historian to the university\u00a0to deliver a lecture on the Civil War era.\u00a0Van Robinson Burnham, a Mississippi native and UM\u00a0alumnus whose lifelong love of history and archaeology prompted his generous support for the center,\u00a0made this lecture series possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD,\u00a0Miss. \u2013 Carol Reardon,\u00a0military historian of the Civil War,\u00a0will discuss providing for the families of Gettysburg\u2019s fallen soldiers April 17 at the University of Mississippi.
