\nOXFORD, Miss.- With its reputation as the swingingest band
\nin all the land, the Count Basie Orchestra brings its
\nunique style to the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts Friday (Oct. 19).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 8 p.m. concert kicks off the popular Ford Series at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi. Tickets are $35, $32 and $29 for
\nvarious seating and available by calling the UM Box Office
\nat 662-915-7411 or by visiting the box office in the Ole
\nMiss Student Union.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe re-emerging popularity of swing music in America was
\njust one factor that prompted inviting the world-renowned
\norchestra to Oxford, said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center
\ndirector.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Another factor was the ensemble itself,” Easterbrook said.
\n“With back-to-back Grammy awards in 1997 and 1998, the
\nCount Basie Orchestra is American musical heritage at its
\nbest. We’re inviting everyone to come and experience
\narguably the best of classic big-band form.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Basie band, directed during the last four years by
\nGrover Mitchell, a band leader with deep roots in orchestra
\nhistory and a long association with its founder, is one of
\nthe most popular and successful big bands in history. With
\n17 Grammy awards to date, the 19-member orchestra has grown
\nup with the Kansas City swing style of Count Basie and
\nadded their own voices to create an unique sound.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nToday, the Basie band is bringing generations of fans
\ntogether. Young audiences who’ve heard their favorite
\nneo-band play “One O’clock Jump” sit or dance side-by-side
\nwith veteran fans who’ve spent a lifetime cherishing
\nBasie’s 1937 recording of the same tune. This
\nmulti-generational appeal is what sets the Basie band apart
\nfrom the current crop of swing bands, Easterbrook said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Swing music is not a fad, especially not with the Basie
\nOrchestra at the helm,” he said. “They remain true to the
\nBasie way. The orchestra celebrates the big-band experience
\nthrough the completely original and identifiable Count
\nBasie repertoire.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
