\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi English professor
\nDavid Galef has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to
\nteach in Japan.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGalef plans to travel to Tokyo in April to spend four
\nmonths, accompanied by his wife, Beth Weinhouse, and
\n12-year-old son, Daniel. He is scheduled to teach at Sophia
\nUniversity and Japan Women’s University, lecturing on
\n20th-century science fiction and the modern America short
\nstory.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Japanese are eager to learn everything they can about
\nAmerican culture, so I’m really looking forward to teaching
\nover there,” Galef said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGalef, who has been teaching at UM for 18 years, earned his
\nbachelor’s degree in English and creative writing from
\nPrinceton University in 1981. He then spent a year in
\nOsaka, Japan, teaching English as a second language. In
\n1982, he returned to the U.S. and completed his doctorate
\nin English at Columbia University in 1989.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

“I’ve always wanted to go back to Japan, but it’s always
\nbeen one thing or another,” he said. “Now just seems like
\nthe right time.” Galef said that he and his family look
\nforward to learning about the country’s culture. In
\npreparation for the trip, they are taking lessons in
\nJapanese.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am delighted that David Galef has received a Fulbright
\ngrant,” said Ann Fisher-Wirth, professor of English, who
\ntraveled to Switzerland and Sweden as Fulbright Scholar. “A
\nhighly accomplished professor and writer, and a very
\ncongenial colleague, David will offer his students a lot,
\nand I know he and his family will have a great time.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “As someone already knowledgeable about Japanese culture
\nand the Japanese language, David is ideally suited to
\nteach students there, as well as to learn a great deal
\nfrom them,” said Kathryn McKee, associate professor of
\nEnglish and former Fulbright Scholar to Germany. “Several
\nother English department faculty members have also
\nreceived Fulbrights, and I think we all returned to Oxford
\nenergized by our international experiences and excited to
\nshare them with our students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGalef has published 13 books, including two books of
\nJapanese translations: “Even Monkeys Fall from Trees, and
\nOther Japanese Proverbs” and “Even a Stone Buddha Can Talk:
\nMore Wit and Wisdom of Japanese Proverbs.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSome 800 U.S. faculty and other professionals travel abroad
\neach year through the Fulbright Scholar Program.
\nEstablished in 1946 under legislation introduced by the
\nlate Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program is
\nintended to build mutual understanding between Americans
\nand the rest of the world.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
\nat the U.S. State Department, the program has exchanged
\nmore than a quarter-million scholars in over 150 countries
\nworldwide. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic
\nand professional achievement, as well as demonstrated
\nleadership potential in their fields.
