\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi launches its
\nannual United Way campaign Monday (Oct. 22).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThis year, Ole Miss hopes to raise at least $115,000 of the
\nUnited Way’s communitywide goal of $460,000, supporting
\nprograms for some 16 Lafayette County agencies in 2008. The
\ngoal was set by faculty and staff members of the Ole Miss
\nUnited Way Steering Committee, which is responsible for the
\ncampus fundraising campaign.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The agencies supported by the United Way touch the lives
\nof many university people,” said Lucile McCook, biology
\ninstructor and campus committee co-chair. “The community is
\ncounting on us to do our share.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCommittee members are urging the university community to
\nparticipate in Fair Share, Associate, or Leadership giving.
\nFair Share givers contribute one hour’s wages each month to
\nthe United Way, Associate givers donate $250 to $499 total
\nand Leadership givers contribute at least $500.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Last year, Ole Miss was the top contributor to the United
\nWay (communitywide) with donations totaling $113,000,” said
\nThelma Curry, University Police Department officer and
\ncampus committee co-chair. “I’d like to see that number
\ngrow.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBefore the kickoff, all UM employees should have received
\npledge cards, explaining how they can pay gifts in full or
\nin installments through payroll deduction. The university’s
\ndrive on behalf of United Way is slated for completion Nov.
\n30.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMore than 99 percent of the money raised for United Way
\nstays in Lafayette County to help fund local charities,
\nincluding the Pantry, Interfaith Compassion Ministry,
\nAmerican Red Cross, Crisis Services, Meals on Wheels, Boys
\n& Girls Clubs, Leap Frog, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of
\nAmerica and Girl Scouts of America.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
