OXFORD, Miss. – “Photographs of the Athenian Acropolis: The
\nRestoration Project,” a photographic narrative of the
\nrestoration of the Greek Acropolis, is on display at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Museum through Nov. 18.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe original exhibit debuted in October 2002 at the Benaki
\nMuseum in Athens, Greece. Produced by the Acropolis
\nRestoration Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture,
\nthe exhibition has traveled to Paris, Rome, London and
\nBrussels, Belgium.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The restoration itself is a formidable project,” said
\nAlbert Sperath, museum director. “The way these photos are
\npresented shows the mind-boggling scope of the project.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe museum, located at the corner of 5th Street and
\nUniversity Avenue, is open to the public 9:30 a.m.-4:30
\np.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday. There
\nis no admission charge.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRestoration began on the Athenian Acropolis in 1975 and
\ncontinues today. Being repaired are damages from air
\npollution, wars, earthquakes, erosion and the rusting of
\niron used in previous restorations. The exhibition,
\nfeaturing the photography of Socratis Mavrommatis, details
\nthe restoration performed by the Acropolis Restoration
\nService.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe exhibition is composed of four units. Photos in section
\none show the damage and wear inflicted on the monuments by
\nboth man and nature. The second unit depicts the work-site
\npreparation necessary for the renovation. The third shows
\nthe main works that were carried out by specialized
\npersonnel. The last unit examines the monuments themselves
\nat various phases of the restoration project in latter
\nyears.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The photos capture something very beautiful about the
\nproject,” said Aileen Ajootian, associate professor of
\nclassics and art. “Having been to Greece every summer since
\n1983, and actually having seen the project, (I think) the
\ndisplay gives a real sense of the buildings and of the
\nreconstruction going on.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAmongst the black-and-white photographs stands a
\n6-by-10-foot lighted color photograph that helps viewers
\nget a feel for the large scope of the project. Also for
\nviewer appeal, the Parthenon’s cella floors have been
\nreproduced on the floor of the gallery.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The reproduction of the cella floor is wonderful, because
\nyou can’t even experience that if you were to go to the
\nParthenon because you can’t go inside to see that,”
\nAjootian said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
