\nOXFORD, Miss. – Two programs designed to focus on women’s
\nissues in the state before the upcoming election are
\nscheduled Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nSponsored by the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender
\nStudies, the brown bag luncheon programs are set for noon
\nin the Student Union Ballroom. The public is invited at no
\ncharge.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The purpose of this series is to foreground issues
\naffecting the status of women – and children – in
\nMississippi, concerns that are seldom raised in the current
\npolitical statewide dialogue,” said Mary Carruth, Isom
\nCenter director. “Another purpose is to drive home the
\nimportance of women voting on November 6.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSpeaker for the first presentation, “Mississippi Law and
\nIntimate Partner Violence,” is Deborah Bell, UM professor
\nof law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The incidence of partner violence remains a serious
\nproblem for women of all backgrounds,” Bell said. “I will
\nbe talking about recent laws that provide additional
\nprotection for women and which are designed to provide more
\nready access to court.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe second program, “Women’s Status and Political
\nParticipation in Mississippi,” features a panel discussion
\nfollowed by questions from the audience. Panelists are
\nretired Supreme Court Justice Kay Cobb; Marianne Hill,
\npolicy analyst at Mississippi Institutions of Higher
\nLearning; Donna Yowell, chair of the Mississippi Commission
\non the Status of Women; and Lena Wiley, executive director
\nof the Interfaith Compassion Ministry in Oxford.
