{"id":35309,"date":"2014-05-14T15:55:15","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T20:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=35309"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:25:36","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:25:36","slug":"civil-rights-films-screened-for-local-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/civil-rights-films-screened-for-local-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil rights films screened for local community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Mississippi Libraries and Center for the Study of Southern Culture have partnered with the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation and the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library to present a set of four films based on the history of the civil rights movement in America.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the four documentaries shown this semester were \u201cThe Loving Story\u201d and \u201cFreedom Riders.\u201d The other films, \u201cThe Abolitionists\u201d and \u201cSlavery by Another Name,\u201d will be shown in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>The films are made possible by a National Endowment for the Humanities initiative called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/created-equal\">Created Equal<\/a>: America\u2019s Civil Rights Struggle.\u201d NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to provide the materials for 473 sites in the U.S. to show the films.<\/p>\n<p>In Oxford, the public library and the J.D. Williams Library are presenting the films to the public at no cost. The screenings are meant to foster discussion, so panel discussions that explore the theme of each film are planned for each screening.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese films chronicle the long and sometimes violent effort to achieve the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence \u2014 life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness \u2014 for all Americans,\u201d said Melissa Dennis, outreach librarian and grant recipient for the University Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for the Study of Southern Culture also received grant funding for the film series to collaborate with the libraries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to receive a grant from NEH to provide programming around these films,\u201d said Becca Walton, associate director of projects for the CSSC. \u201cThe four Created Equalfilms provide a vehicle to connect the stories of the long civil rights movement and the changing meanings of freedom and equality in the U.S., the South, Mississippi and Oxford.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Mississippi Libraries and Center for the Study of Southern Culture have partnered with the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation and the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library to present a set of four films based on the history of the civil rights movement in America.
