\nOXFORD, Miss. – Fifteen University of Mississippi alumni
\nreturned to campus Friday (Sept. 21) to give Master of
\nBusiness Administration students an opportunity to see what
\ntheir degrees can do for them in the real world.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“The MBA Career Development Forum allows participating
\nalumni to discuss their experience in transitioning from
\nbusiness school to work, how to prepare for the
\ninterviewing process and what the MBA student should
\nrealistically look for in that first job after earning
\ntheir degree,” said John Holleman, director of corporate
\nrelations and MBA services.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe MBA program at Ole Miss allows students to earn their
\ndegree in 12 months by taking advantage of summer school
\nand two intersession classes. The short time frame
\nencourages many students to continue directly from
\nundergraduate into graduate school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOf the 35-45 students who go through the MBA program each
\nyear, 70 percent have come directly from an undergraduate
\nprogram and 50 percent received their bachelor’s degree
\nfrom Ole Miss, said Holleman.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe forum featured 15 alumni who graduated from the program
\nwithin the last 10 years. Along with formal presentations,
\nstudents were offered casual time to ask individual
\nquestions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAshley Bouldin, marketing analyst with International
\nPaper’s Foodservice Business in Memphis, spoke to students
\nin the marketing section of the forum.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Getting an MBA meant learning to think strategically and
\ngetting a sense of how all the components of business work
\ntogether,” Bouldin said. “Studying other functions in depth
\nbroadens your scope beyond your functional area and gives
\nyou the ability to work more easily with, and possibly in,
\nother areas of business.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents welcomed the support and advice of the alumni.
\nSince graduate classes often prove to be more difficult
\nthan those at the undergraduate level, encouragement is
\ngladly accepted.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The hardest aspect of the MBA classes is the amount of
\nwork that is expected to be done,” said MBA student Ragan
\nHayward of Grenada. “It was a reality check coming from a
\nminimal amount of work in the undergraduate level to the
\npressing work given in the MBA program.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn its fourth year, the forum allows students to see how
\nrecent MBA graduates are benefitting from their hard-earned
\ndegrees.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I believe that the program is a great way to see some
\ndifferent perspectives on various jobs in the market,”
\nHayward said. “It also provides a great networking
\nopportunity, as the main goal of getting an MBA is to
\nreceive a promising job offer.”
