\nOXFORD, Miss. – Three choral groups at the University of
\nMississippi present a concert Tuesday (Oct. 23) at North
\nOxford Baptist Church.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 7:30 p.m. program by the choral music division in the
\nDepartment of Music is the first of two annual fall
\nconcerts, with the second scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the
\nsame time and place. Both are free and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe upcoming hourlong concert features the Women’s Glee and
\nMen’s Glee choirs and the Women’s Ensemble, which are
\ncomposed of students from all disciplines. The evening
\nrepertoire includes selections by several composers,
\nincluding Randall Thompson, Felix Mendelssohn and Ludwig
\nvan Beethoven.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe second fall concert features the Chamber Singers and
\nConcert Singers, as well as the Northeast Mississippi
\nCommunity College Choir.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDon Trott, director of choral activities, said the upcoming
\nperformances should appeal to audiences of all ages.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The variety of pieces and artists being performed in this
\nconcert is what will be appealing for the audience,” said
\nTrott. “It’s an enjoyable evening of choral singing
\nperformed by students at Ole Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDebra Spurgeon, associate professor of music, and three
\nMaster’s of Music students are scheduled to conduct during
\nthe concert. The students are Catherine Swan of Niceville,
\nFla., and Brandon Heishman of Harrisonburg, Va., both
\ngraduate students in choral conducting; and Christian
\nFeazell of Monticello, Ark., a graduate student in voice
\nperformance. Swan will conduct the Women’s Ensemble, and
\nHeishman and Feazell will conduct the Men’s Glee.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Allowing our master’s degree students to conduct in this
\nconcert gives them a platform to practice their conducting
\nskills,” Trott said. “It’s also enjoyable for me to see my
\nstudents up there doing what they love.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTrott said North Oxford Baptist Church “has great acoustics
\nand is quite conducive to choral music.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe music department invites students of all disciplines
\nwho are interested in singing to join one of the choral
\ngroups, Trott said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“If you have a passion for singing, choral music welcomes
\nstudents with open arms. Our philosophy is, if a student
\nwants to sing, then there’s a choir for them; we place our
\nstudents in a choir that best suits their abilities. We’ll
\nlisten to anyone at any time, but now is a great time with
\nspring registration right around the corner.”
