\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony
\nOrchestra performs a concert of romantic masterworks Monday
\n(Oct. 22) at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 8 p.m. program at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts features UM faculty soloist and popular
\npianist Ian Hominick. Tickets, at $10 for general admission
\nand $6 for UM students with valid IDs, are available at the
\nUM Box Office in the Student Union or by calling
\n662-915-7411.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe concert repertoire includes Overture to “The Merry
\nWives of Windsor” by Otto Nicolai, Piano Concerto No. 1 in
\nG Minor by Felix Mendelssohn and “Romeo and Juliet”
\nFantasy-Overture by Peter Tchaikovsky, said Ronald Vernon,
\nassociate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and the
\norchestra’s conductor\/artistic director. Hominick is slated
\nto perform Mendelssohn’s concerto.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNicolai is remembered primarily for his operatic setting of
\nShakespeare’s comedy, but he composed in many different
\nvocal and instrumental forms, Vernon said. “The overture
\nshowcases Nicolai’s gift for beautiful melody and masterful
\nuse of the orchestra,” he said. Vernon described
\nMendelssohn’s piano concerto as “full of innovations,
\nincluding the unusually brief orchestral introduction
\nbefore the first entry of the soloist.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The overall effect is one of concise brilliance, with
\nplenty of pyrotechnics for the soloist.” “Romeo and
\nJuliet,” Tchaikovsky’s first important work for orchestra,
\nwas first composed in 1870 but did not reach its final form
\nuntil 10 years later, Vernon said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Rather than attempt a music narrative to the familiar
\nstory, the composer chose three important dramatic elements
\nof the story the tale of Friar Lawrence, the conflict
\nbetween the Montagues and Capulets, and the love between
\nRomeo and Juliet creating distinct thematic material for
\neach one and developing each one in relationship to the
\nother. The resulting masterpiece is one of the most
\nfrequently performed works for symphony orchestra,” Vernon
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFounded in 2002, the L-O-U Symphony Orchestra provides
\nfaculty, students and local professional musicians an
\nopportunity to create an enhanced orchestra experience for
\nthe entire community. The orchestra had its inaugural
\nconcert in November 2004.
