OXFORD, Miss. – Poet Carolyn Forche reads at the University
\nof Mississippi Wednesday (Oct. 24) as part of the Grisham
\nVisiting Writers Series.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe free, public program begins at 7 p.m. at the Ole
\nMiss-Oxford Depot.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA native of Detroit, Mich., Forche is known by many within
\nthe literary world as being a political poet, calling
\nherself a “poet of witness.” Her thematic expressions can
\nbe observed in both “The Country Between Us” and “The Angel
\nof History,” which examine the dehumanizing effects of
\npolitical repression within society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Carolyn Forche has been an important voice and force in
\nAmerican poetry since her 1982 book of poems, “The Country
\nBetween Us,” which portrays her time as a human rights
\nadvocate in El Salvador,” said Gary Short, visiting
\nassistant professor of English. “Her writing teaches us
\nthat the world is bigger than the self, and bigger than
\nNorth America. Like the title of the anthology she edited,
\nher poetry is an antidote against forgetting.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nForche received a bachelor’s degree in international
\nrelations and creative writing from Michigan State
\nUniversity and master’s from Bowling Green State
\nUniversity. A faculty member at Skidmore College in
\nSaratoga Springs, N.Y., she has taught at several other
\ninstitutions, including the University of Arkansas, Vassar
\nCollege and Columbia University, and in the Master of Fine
\nArts program at George Mason University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nForche won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award honoring
\nher literary work “Gathering of the Tribes,” and she
\nreceived the Guggenheim Fellowship Award. “The Country
\nBetween Us” won her the Poetry Society of America’s Alice
\nFay di Castagnola Award and was the Lamont Poetry selection
\nfor the Academy of American Poets. Her literary work “The
\nAngel of History” was selected for the Los Angeles Times
\nBook Award. Her writing has been featured in such
\npublications as The New York Times, The Nation, Esquire,
\nThe Washington Post and Mother Jones.
