\nOXFORD, Miss. – Social integration is the subject of a
\nroundtable discussion Wednesday (Oct. 24) at the University
\nof Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe 6:30 p.m. program in Nutt Auditorium of Scruggs Hall is
\nfree and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Confronting Social Segregation at Ole Miss: A Roundtable
\nDiscussion” is to feature participants from several
\ndifferent student groups.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPanelists include Sydney McGaha, director of diversity
\naffairs for the Associated Student Body; Bryan Doyle, an
\nintern with the William Winter Institute for Racial
\nReconciliation; Megan McRaney, a leader of Respect
\nMississippi and ASB chief of staff; Annette Hollowell, a
\nthird-year law student and intern with the Winter
\nInstitute; and Kenneth Brown, representing the Black
\nStudent Union. Jeffrey Jackson, associate professor of
\nsociology and anthropology, is the moderator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe session is intended to open dialogue about social
\nintegration issues at Ole Miss, McGaha said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s not about just discussing the problem, but also
\ntalking about ways to address the issue,” McGaha said.
\n“This roundtable is a vehicle for bringing together people
\nfrom various backgrounds and asking them what can be done
\nto make a change.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe idea for the event emerged from discussions among
\nfaculty members, Jackson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A group of faculty members from different departments,
\nsuch as African-American studies, political science,
\nsociology and anthropology, and history, discussed ways to
\nhave a beneficial dialogue regarding social integration
\nfollowing the DKE incident,” Jackson said. “These students
\nwill discuss their efforts to bridge the divide between
\nstudents of different races and help identify those
\nobstacles that make it hard to close that divide.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe topics to be addressed are generally not discussed in
\nsocial situations, McRaney said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“These topics we’re going to discuss are those that most
\npeople are uncomfortable talking about,” she said. “Issues
\nsuch as the DKE incident and the lack of social integration
\nare coming up, and most people avoid these issues unless it
\nis in an academic environment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe intent is not to talk at students but to offer
\ndiscussion about ways to change the atmosphere, said Marvin
\nKing, assistant professor of political science.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This discussion is not to lecture at students about social
\nintegration but to engage in constructive dialogue,” King
\nsaid. “We want to figure out how we can get students at
\nthis university working together, socializing together and
\nengaging in activities together because they want to, not
\nbecause it’s expected.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe focus of the discussion is to learn about obstacles
\nstudent organizations have faced while trying to integrate
\nstudent life at Ole Miss, Jackson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We want to make this a dialogue that does not point
\nfingers or cast blame,” he said. “We want to look at ways
\nto overcome social segregation at this school.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
