{"id":360,"date":"2007-10-29T09:48:33","date_gmt":"2007-10-29T14:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=360"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:25:27","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:25:27","slug":"roundtable-organizers-hope-to-open-dialogue-on-social-integration-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/roundtable-organizers-hope-to-open-dialogue-on-social-integration-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Roundtable Organizers Hope to Open Dialogue on Social Integration Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Social integration is the subject of a<br \/>\nroundtable discussion Wednesday (Oct. 24) at the University<br \/>\nof Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The 6:30 p.m. program in Nutt Auditorium of Scruggs Hall is<br \/>\nfree and open to the public.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Confronting Social Segregation at Ole Miss: A Roundtable<br \/>\nDiscussion&#8221; is to feature participants from several<br \/>\ndifferent student groups.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Panelists include Sydney McGaha, director of diversity<br \/>\naffairs for the Associated Student Body; Bryan Doyle, an<br \/>\nintern with the William Winter Institute for Racial<br \/>\nReconciliation; Megan McRaney, a leader of Respect<br \/>\nMississippi and ASB chief of staff; Annette Hollowell, a<br \/>\nthird-year law student and intern with the Winter<br \/>\nInstitute; and Kenneth Brown, representing the Black<br \/>\nStudent Union. Jeffrey Jackson, associate professor of<br \/>\nsociology and anthropology, is the moderator.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The session is intended to open dialogue about social<br \/>\nintegration issues at Ole Miss, McGaha said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It&#8217;s not about just discussing the problem, but also<br \/>\ntalking about ways to address the issue,&#8221; McGaha said.<br \/>\n&#8220;This roundtable is a vehicle for bringing together people<br \/>\nfrom various backgrounds and asking them what can be done<br \/>\nto make a change.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The idea for the event emerged from discussions among<br \/>\nfaculty members, Jackson said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;A group of faculty members from different departments,<br \/>\nsuch as African-American studies, political science,<br \/>\nsociology and anthropology, and history, discussed ways to<br \/>\nhave a beneficial dialogue regarding social integration<br \/>\nfollowing the DKE incident,&#8221; Jackson said. &#8220;These students<br \/>\nwill discuss their efforts to bridge the divide between<br \/>\nstudents of different races and help identify those<br \/>\nobstacles that make it hard to close that divide.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The topics to be addressed are generally not discussed in<br \/>\nsocial situations, McRaney said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;These topics we&#8217;re going to discuss are those that most<br \/>\npeople are uncomfortable talking about,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Issues<br \/>\nsuch as the DKE incident and the lack of social integration<br \/>\nare coming up, and most people avoid these issues unless it<br \/>\nis in an academic environment.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The intent is not to talk at students but to offer<br \/>\ndiscussion about ways to change the atmosphere, said Marvin<br \/>\nKing, assistant professor of political science.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;This discussion is not to lecture at students about social<br \/>\nintegration but to engage in constructive dialogue,&#8221; King<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;We want to figure out how we can get students at<br \/>\nthis university working together, socializing together and<br \/>\nengaging in activities together because they want to, not<br \/>\nbecause it&#8217;s expected.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The focus of the discussion is to learn about obstacles<br \/>\nstudent organizations have faced while trying to integrate<br \/>\nstudent life at Ole Miss, Jackson said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We want to make this a dialogue that does not point<br \/>\nfingers or cast blame,&#8221;
