{"id":361,"date":"2007-10-29T09:49:46","date_gmt":"2007-10-29T14:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=361"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:25:27","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:25:27","slug":"new-york-festival-names-um-producer-food-filmmaker-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/new-york-festival-names-um-producer-food-filmmaker-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Festival Names UM Producer &#8216;Food Filmmaker of the Year&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 5px; width: 300px; float: left; background-color: #ffffff\" class=\"jce?caption\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/news\/new%20york%20festival%20names.jpg\" alt=\"new york festival names.jpg\" title=\"new york festival names.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0pt; float: left; width: 300px; height: 225px\" height=\"225\" width=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #000000; text-align: center; clear: both\" class=\"jce?caption?text\">\nJoe York\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; A filmmaker at the University of<br \/>\nMississippi is making a name for himself around the country<br \/>\nfor his work showcasing food and its legends.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Joe York, producer\/director at UM&#8217;s Center for Documentary<br \/>\nProjects through the Office of Outreach, was recently named<br \/>\nFood Filmmaker of the Year at the New York City Food Film<br \/>\nFestival.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>York&#8217;s work includes filming subjects of the Oral History<br \/>\nInitiative of the Southern Foodways Alliance, which is an<br \/>\ninstitute of UM&#8217;s Center for the Study of Southern Culture.<br \/>\nThese are stories about the men and women who grow, create,<br \/>\nserve and consume the food and drink of the American<br \/>\nSouth.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;At the SFA, we pay homage to the lifework of our region&#8217;s<br \/>\nculinary standard bearers,&#8221; said SFA director John T. Edge.<br \/>\n&#8220;Joe York&#8217;s films broadcast that message on the big screen,<br \/>\nwhich is, after all, where these champions of vernacular<br \/>\ncookery belong. We&#8217;re proud of his work, proud to call him<br \/>\na member of our documentary team.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Described by Corby Kummer in The Atlantic Monthly as a<br \/>\n&#8220;gifted young filmmaker,&#8221; York, who has nearly 20 films to<br \/>\nhis credit, began his filmmaking career as a UM Southern<br \/>\nstudies graduate student. It was then that he and fellow<br \/>\ngraduate student, Matt Bruder, took on the challenge of<br \/>\ndocumenting the life work of Bill Best, a Kentucky native<br \/>\nknown for growing and preserving heirloom tomatoes and<br \/>\nbeans.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>That first film, &#8220;Saving Seeds,&#8221; has been a favorite on the<br \/>\nfilm circuit and was a finalist for the Golden Snail Award<br \/>\nfrom Slow Food.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The NYC Food Film Festival, in its inaugural year, grouped<br \/>\nfilms by theme and showed them to festival audiences during<br \/>\nthree separate weekends in June and September. York&#8217;s films<br \/>\nwere screened during each weekend. He was asked to come to<br \/>\nNew York for the screening of his work-in-progress &#8220;Above<br \/>\nthe Line: Saving Willie Mae&#8217;s Scotch House,&#8221; a documentary<br \/>\nabout the work of Oxford restaurateur John Currence, the<br \/>\nSouthern Foodways Alliance and volunteers from the across<br \/>\nthe country and around the world who have restored a<br \/>\nculinary and cultural landmark in New Orleans<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>York said he was surprised by the New York honor. &#8220;They<br \/>\ninvited me to go up there, and so I did, and it was great<br \/>\nfun. They had a huge screen set up on the Water Taxi Beach<br \/>\nin Queens and two hundred to three hundred people came out<br \/>\nto watch the films. I didn&#8217;t know I was getting an award,<br \/>\nso it was a real surprise. But it is nice to be honored by<br \/>\npeople who do the same thing you do.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>He said it was amazing to see the film set against the<br \/>\nskyline of New York City. &#8220;It was a wonderful display of<br \/>\nSouthern culture in the North,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>York&#8217;s work not only celebrates the lives of the men and<br \/>\nwomen who are his subjects, but his films also honor the<br \/>\nuniversity. His shooting schedule for the food films must<br \/>\nbe balanced with his work at the center documenting the<br \/>\npeople and events of Ole Miss, including shooting footage<br \/>\nfor commercials and delivering distance learning<br \/>\ntechnology, as well as providing sound and light production<br \/>\nfor major campus events.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Any time work of this caliber by a university employee is<br \/>\nseen in so many different parts of the country and by so<br \/>\nmany people, it&#8217;s a great tribute to the University of<br \/>\nMississippi,&#8221;
