\nOXFORD, Miss. – The city of Oxford and the University of
\nMississippi celebrate a major recreational and
\ntransportation initiative Friday (Oct. 26) with a ribbon
\ncutting ceremony for Phase I of the Pathway project.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe ceremony, set for 4 p.m. at the Ole Miss-Oxford Depot,
\nincludes a ribbon cutting for the pedestrian bridge that
\ncrosses Jackson Avenue. U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker and city
\nofficials are to participate.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter the ceremony, celebrants are invited to join in a
\npedestrian\/bicycle parade along the Oxford Depot Trail to
\nthe Boys and Girls Club on Washington Avenue, where
\nrefreshments are to be served.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The new Rail-Trails are the product of a great
\ncollaboration between the city and the university that
\nbenefits the university community, citizens of Oxford and
\nthe visitors we share,” said Mike Mossing, UM associate
\nprofessor of chemistry and biochemistry and a member of the
\nOxford Pathways Commission. “We hope that seniors out for
\nan evening stroll, kids learning to ride without training
\nwheels, patrons of the Ford Center and football fans alike
\nwill enjoy the trails for years to come.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Phase I project includes full access to 6.25 miles of
\ninfrastructure for joggers, walkers, strollers, runners and
\ncyclists and provides choices for a nonvehicular means of
\ncommuting to work and school, outdoor exercise and
\nrecreation for all ages. The project was funded by the city
\nof Oxford and Mississippi Department of Transportation, and
\nthe university provided an easement to use property along
\nthe old rail bed for the trail.
