\nOXFORD, Miss. – A research professor from Louisiana State
\nUniversity is slated to speak Nov. 1 in Oxford on effective
\nexercise practices for overweight children.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe free, public lecture by Melinda Sothern is scheduled
\nfor 7 p.m. at the Oxford Conference Center on Sisk Avenue.
\nTitled “Safe and Effective Exercise for Overweight
\nChildren,” the presentation is part of the annual meeting
\nof the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine,
\nhosted this year by the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMark Loftin, chair of UM’s Department of Health, Exercise
\nScience and Recreation Management, said Sothern is one of
\nhis former students and is considered to be a leading
\nresearcher on childhood obesity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Dr. Sothern is on the cutting edge of research regarding
\nchildhood obesity issues. She also is excellent in applying
\nher research to parents and teachers,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt the LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Sothern
\ndirects the Section of Health Promotion in the Division of
\nBehavioral and Community Health in the Health Sciences
\nCenter, School of Public Health and the Prevention of
\nChildhood Obesity Laboratory. Her research has been widely
\npublished in peer-reviewed scientific journals and recently
\nin a scientific textbook, “The Handbook of Pediatric
\nObesity: Clinical Management” (Taylor and Francis, 2006).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSothern is the principal investigator for two National
\nInstitutes of Health studies and is a co-investigator in a
\nsix-year NIH-sponsored study on increasing physical
\nactivity in adolescent girls. She is also involved in
\nseveral other nationwide health studies sponsored by NIH.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShe is considered a national spokesperson for overweight
\nyouth and has been featured extensively in national and
\ninternational television, radio and print media, including
\n“Good Morning, America,” “The Today Show,” “48 Hours” and
\n“The Oprah Winfrey Show,” as well as on the CNN
\ninternational channel, Fox News Network, Nickelodeon,
\nDiscovery Channel and in USA Today, The Washington Post,
\nThe Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Parents,
\nParenting, Better Homes and Gardens, and Prevention.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSothern has led her field in establishing standardized
\nguidelines for prescribing exercise for children with
\nincreasing levels of obesity. She is best known for her
\nwork in promoting active play as a means of preventing and
\ntreating childhood obesity. She has been a member of the
\nAmerican College of Sports Medicine for more than 15 years
\nand is a fellow and council member of The Obesity Society.
\nShe co-founded the Pediatric Obesity Interest Group, which
\nis formally integrated into The Obesity Society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
