\nOXFORD, Miss. – Thanks to a grant from the Phil Hardin
\nFoundation, the University of Mississippi School of
\nEducation becomes the first higher education group in the
\nnation to join the District Management Council.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nLocated in Harvard Square, adjacent to Harvard University,
\nin Cambridge, Mass., the DMC is an organization of
\nsuperintendents from leading public school districts
\nnationwide who are continuously seeking excellence. Its
\nmission is to identify, analyze and disseminate the best
\nmanagement practices for improving student achievement,
\nenhancing educational practices and reducing cost
\nthroughout the districts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Three years ago, the District Management Council set out
\nto address the needs of local school district
\nsuperintendents for more suitable management support and
\nskill development,” said DMC managing director Joseph
\nScherer. “The commitment from the Ole Miss School of
\nEducation to improve the management skills of school
\nadministrators across Mississippi is congruent with our
\nmission, and we believe that working together we can
\naccelerate the best practices and broaden our impact.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe DMC has more than 60 school districts among its
\nmembers, including large, urban ones such as Miami and
\nHouston, Texas, and small, rural districts such as Oxford,
\nHattiesburg and DeSoto County.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are delighted to become the first university membership
\nin this organization,” Tom Burnham, UM education dean. “We
\ngenuinely feel our leadership position and relationships
\nwith local school districts position us for a prominent
\nrole as a facilitator of this tremendous program.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe membership fee for UM to join the DMC was made possible
\nthrough a $50,000 grant from the Phil Hardin Foundation,
\nbased in Meridian.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTom Wacaster, vice president for educational programs and
\nresearch at the foundation, said the invitation to join the
\nDMC marks an important opportunity to improve educational
\npolicy, leadership and practice across the state.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMembership in DMC enables UM education faculty and
\nadministrators to be involved in dialogue with
\nprofessionals in some of the country’s best school
\ndistricts. These firsthand conversations about the most
\ncurrent research and practices being used in successful
\nK-12 schools will be shared with partners of the School of
\nEducation around the state, Burnham said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A key feature of the DMC is the sharing of information
\namong some of the most progressive superintendents across
\nthe country. This allows school districts to learn from one
\nanother and avoid repeating mistakes that have already been
\nmade,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
