\nOXFORD, Miss. – A special event Thursday (Nov. 1) at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi marks the opening of the Sarah
\nIsom Center for Women Collection in the John D. Williams
\nLibrary.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe announcement is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the library’s
\nDepartment of Archives and Special Collections on the third
\nfloor. A sampling of material from the collection is to be
\navailable for viewing and refreshments are to be served. A
\nreception follows in the Farrington Gallery of Bryant
\nHall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are delighted to announce the opening of the Sarah Isom
\nCenter for Women Collection, archived by the award-winning
\nJennifer Ford,” said Mary Carruth, Isom Center director.
\n“Our center is forward-thinking but not without honoring
\nour past, a retrospection that inspires our continued
\nmomentum.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“On this occasion, we will especially remember the
\ncontributions of our founding director Jan Hawks, whose
\npapers compose much of the archive.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe collection contains administrative paperwork and
\npersonal subject files gathered by the center, which was
\nestablished at the university in 1981 to address the
\nchanging roles and expectations of women students, faculty
\nand staff.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“By Nov. 1, the collection will be processed and ready for
\npatron use,” said Jennifer Ford, director of archives and
\nspecial collections. “The material encompasses a wide
\nvariety of topics relating to issues affecting women and
\nincludes profiles of prominent women who have enlightened
\nand improved the lives of others.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Isom Center performs both academic and service
\nfunctions. It coordinates UM’s minor in gender studies and
\npromotes research and scholarship about women and gender by
\ndeveloping a multidisciplinary program of study that helps
\nstudents appreciate the special concerns, contributions and
\nperspectives of women. It also is committed to reaching out
\nto the community through a variety of programs and
\nservices.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe event and reception opening the collection are
\nco-sponsored by the Isom Center, Archives and Special
\nCollections, and Office of the Vice Chancellor for
\nUniversity Relations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
