\nMike Aune\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
OXFORD, Miss. – Ask most anyone who knew Mike Aune what he
\nwas like and they’ll probably tell you two things: that he
\nloved life, and he loved all the people in his.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“Mike was the most incredibly dynamic and enthusiastic
\nguy,” said John Gutierrez, professor of foreign language
\neducation at the University of Mississippi Croft Institute
\nfor International Studies. “He was so full of life. He is a
\nstudent I’ve seen work the hardest, and he was so driven.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nTragically, his life ended too soon. Aune, a 2000 graduate
\nof Lafayette High School and a 2004 UM graduate, died
\nearlier this year of an aneurysm at age 25.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHis parents, Eddie and Cindy Aune of Oxford, have
\nestablished the Mike Aune Memorial Scholarship Endowment in
\nhis memory. The scholarship will assist deserving students
\npursuing an education at the Croft Institute. The recipient
\nis to be a rising sophomore who shows exceptional promise,
\nand the award can be renewed for three years contingent
\nupon the recipient maintaining at least a 3.0 grade-point
\naverage.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “We are grateful for the opportunities afforded Mike by
\nthe Croft Institute,” Eddie Aune said. “His studies and
\ntravel fed his hunger to meet new people and know more
\nabout the world. It prepared him for a great career with
\nthe Defense Intelligence Agency, which he loved.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We hope that this scholarship will enable other students
\nto follow their dreams like Mike, and prepare for a career
\nin international service. We are humbled to be able to
\nassist other young men and women, and to honor Mike’s
\nadventuresome spirit by supporting the Croft Institute’s
\nmission.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Croft Institute, a highly competitive program at UM,
\naccepts only 45 students each year for the international
\nstudies major. Aune, who was one of those selected, was a
\ndedicated student, traveling to Spain and Chile to better
\nlearn Spanish and teach English. After graduation, he
\ntaught English at a private school in Pachuca, Mexico, from
\nJuly 2004 to July 2005.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“When he returned from teaching abroad, Mike helped other
\nCroft scholars interested in teaching apply to the school
\nwhere he taught,” said Michael Metcalf, former director of
\nthe Croft Institute who serves as UM’s associate provost
\nfor international affairs. “It just goes to show that he
\nalways saw the bigger picture and looked for ways he could
\nhelp.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn October 2006, Aune was hired as an intelligence analyst
\nwith the Defense Intelligence Agency-Department of Defense
\nin Crystal City, Va., where he worked as an all-source
\nintelligence officer for the Counter-Narcotics Trafficking
\nOffice. He was employed there at the time of his death.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“His accomplishments, for such a short time with the
\nagency, were remarkable,” said Tony Tomlinson, Aune’s
\nsupervisor. “Very few new employees produce such highly
\npraised reports as Mike did on his first try. He was a
\nspecial young man, and we miss him greatly.” Robert Allen,
\nAune’s pastor at Oxford’s First Baptist Church, said Aune
\nmade an impact in his own life.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Mike had the right perspective of life in not letting
\nsetbacks affect his plans for the future,” Allen said. “He
\nalways looked forward and personally encouraged me to face
\nthe future. I think this scholarship will help perpetuate
\nMike’s positive view of life.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“His traits were humor, generosity, thoughtfulness,
\nresponsibility and a strong work ethic,” Metcalf said. “We
\nmiss him dearly and are honored to have a scholarship at
\nthe Croft Institute bear his name.”
