\nOXFORD, Miss. – Carlton Turner, former director of the
\nWhite House Drug Abuse Policy Office, discusses “From the
\nMarijuana Field of Ole Miss to the White House, and All
\nPoints in Between” Thursday (Oct. 25) at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe free, public event at 11 a.m. in the Ford Center for
\nPerforming Arts is part of the Coy W. Waller Distinguished
\nLecture series in the School of Pharmacy. Turner, president
\nand CEO of Carrington Laboratories, served as director of
\nthe UM Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in
\n1980-84.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Coy Waller Distinguished Lecture Series affords
\nfaculty and students an opportunity to learn from highly
\naccomplished, internationally recognized scientists and
\nthought leaders,” said Barbara G. Wells, dean of the
\npharmacy school. “We are honored to have Dr. Carlton Turner
\npresent our centennial-year Waller Lecture. He brings
\nunique perspectives from an illustrious career, and we are
\nlooking very much forward to his lecture.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBefore joining Carrington in 1994, Turner was president and
\nCEO of Princeton Diagnostic Laboratories of America. He was
\nan assistant to President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to ’87
\nwith cabinet rank and was director of the White House Drug
\nAbuse Policy Office.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring his time at UM, Turner also served as director of
\nthe school’s National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded
\nmarijuana project and was co-author, along with Waller and
\nothers, of “Marijuana, An Annotated Bibliography.” Besides
\nhis research on cannabis, he developed a comprehensive
\nresearch program on cocaine, coca leaves and cocaine base.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTurner received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and his
\nmaster’s and doctorate in organic chemistry from the
\nUniversity of Southern Mississippi. He has published more
\nthan 125 scientific papers, patents and book chapters on
\ntopics ranging from analytical technology of natural
\nproducts to psychiatry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Coy W. Waller Distinguished Lecture series was
\nestablished in 2004 to recognize Waller’s contributions to
\nhis discipline and to the pharmacy school. Each year the
\nlecture is hosted by a department within the school, and
\nlecturers are selected for their contributions to the host
\ndepartment’s discipline. The 2007 lecture is hosted by the
\nDepartment of Medicinal Chemistry.
