OXFORD, Miss. – Eight-year-old Al’Nayiah Dean loves to
\nread, and her favorite book is “Only the Stars.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nDean is among 15 students at Oxford Elementary School
\nreceiving one-on-one reading instruction from 15 University
\nof Mississippi senior elementary education majors. The
\nafter-school program is helping Dean, who dreams of
\nbecoming a teacher herself.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I like reading, because it makes me better at things,”
\nsaid the third-grader.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn this pilot program of UM’s new Center for Excellence in
\nLiteracy Instruction, tutors meet twice weekly with secondand
\nthird-graders who are struggling readers. They practice
\nreading to improve their comprehension skills and increase
\nfluency.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA $1.5 million Robert M. Hearin Foundation grant funded
\nCELI, which aims to prepare reading and literacy teachers
\nwith the skills to effectively teach all children to read
\nthough intensive hands-on training, professional
\ndevelopment and mentoring. A master’s degree program in
\nliteracy education is scheduled to begin next summer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nDean’s tutor, 22-year-old Shy Galloway of Wiggins, enjoys
\nhelping the children. Gallaway said the tutoring sessions,
\nwhich are part of the Reading Diagnosis and Intervention
\ncourse work for senior elementary education majors, give
\nher a better understanding of the students’ needs and
\nempower her to improve her teaching strategies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Al’Nayiah’s reading and comprehension skills improve every
\nday,” Galloway said. “She is reading more fluently and has
\nbetter word recognition. I’m really excited about her
\nimprovements.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOxford Elementary principal Evelyn Smith said she is
\nthankful for the partnership between her school and the UM
\nSchool of Education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We’re hoping to build success with our struggling
\nreaders,” she said. “These one-on-one tutors are extremely
\nbeneficial for our students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nCELI director Angela Rutherford said, “Our tutors first
\nassessed the individual student’s reading development, and
\nthen based their lesson plans on each student’s reading
\nneeds; it’s individual, specialized tutoring.”
