\nOXFORD, Miss. – A business administration professor at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi has been recognized at an
\ninternational convention for her research article
\n“Communication in the Transition to Self-directed Work
\nTeams,” which was published in the Journal of Business
\nCommunication.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nJeanette Martin was awarded Best Article of 2006 at the
\nAssociation for Business Communication’s International
\nConvention, held earlier this month in Washington D.C.
\nMartin, professor of business communication, was on hand to
\naccept the award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The article was a longitudinal study of a company that
\nmoved from a hierarchy to a team-base style of management,”
\nMartin said. “This part of the study was dealing with the
\nchanges in communication that went on during the
\ntransition.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlong with Martin, who has been teaching at Ole Miss for
\nmore than 17 years, the research team included two other
\nmembers, both with Ole Miss ties: Roberta Kraples, who
\nretired from the business faculty in 2006, and Ceasar
\nDouglas, associate professor at Florida State University,
\nwho completed his Ph.D. at Ole Miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe 18-month research process consisted of a series of
\nthree interview sessions with employees and three
\nquestionnaires, which were spread in intervals throughout
\nthe transition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It is always nice as a researcher to have your peers
\nrecognize the work that you are doing,” Martin said. “It
\ncomes out in your teaching, because you can much better
\nteach what you have researched and experienced firsthand.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDel Hawley, associate dean of the business school, said,
\n“Research helps to keep professors at the cutting edge of
\nknowledge in their particular disciplines, which ensures
\nthat their students are exposed to the most up-to-date and
\nrelevant knowledge in their courses. Research in the
\nbusiness disciplines helps to improve the efficiency and
\ncompetitiveness of all types of businesses all over the
\nworld, which helps to build strong economies that improve
\nall peoples’ lives.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMartin received her undergraduate degree in business
\neducation from University of Michigan, an MBA from the
\nUniversity of Chicago and master’s in curriculum and
\ninstruction from the University of Memphis.
