\nOXFORD, Miss. – A world renowned scholar in Italian studies
\nvisits the University of Mississippi Monday (Nov. 5) to
\ndiscuss Francesco Petrarca (known in English as Petrarch),
\na major figure in the Italian Renaissance.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nSpeaking at 6:30 p.m. in Bondurant Auditorium, Diego
\nZancani has titled his address “Renaissance Misogyny and
\nthe Rejection of Petrarch.” The free, public program is
\nUM’s 47th annual Christopher Longest Lecture.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA widely published author of Italian poetry, language and
\nculture of the Renaissance period, Zancani is a Fellow of
\nBalliol College at Oxford University. His research
\ninterests include the history of Italian language and
\ndialects, and the history of early printing, as well as
\nRenaissance literature and Italian courts. He received the
\nequivalent of a doctoral degree in foreign languages from
\nBocconi University in Milan in 1967.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are truly honored and excited to receive Professor
\nZancani as our Longest lecturer,” said Donald Dyer, chair
\nof modern languages. “Italian studies is a less common
\noffering in this series, and his expertise and engaging
\nstyle will make this a special event.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM faculty member Angela Tumini, professor of Italian and
\nEuropean film studies, learned firsthand of Zancani’s
\nexpertise when he served as her doctoral thesis adviser at
\nOxford University.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Dr. Zancani’s lecture will provide a better understanding
\nof Italian society during the Renaissance and how women
\nwere regarded during that time,” Tumini said. “He’s a very
\nentertaining speaker.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Christopher Longest Lecture series was established at
\nUM in 1960 by Ann Waller Reins Longest, in recognition of
\nChristopher Longest’s distinguished service to the
\nuniversity from 1908 to 1951 in the departments of Classics
\nand Modern Languages. The annual lectures are delivered by
\nscholars in the fields of the modern languages and English
\nliterature.
