Photo by Will Mestayer.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; A handful of upperclassmen in the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi&#8217;s School of Engineering are<br \/>\ntutoring an exponentially larger number of their peers and<br \/>\nunderclassmen through a program they have launched and<br \/>\nmaintain.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Five juniors and seniors provide the tutoring sessions,<br \/>\nwhich are held each Tuesday in Carrier Hall. Tutors<br \/>\nvoluntarily offer their services to fellow students at no<br \/>\ncharge. The number of students served each week averages 15<br \/>\nto 30, with noticeable higher attendance around exam time.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Students showing up for the tutoring sessions get help with<br \/>\nengineering classes only.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The program is about older engineering students, ready to<br \/>\nbegin their careers, aiding their younger peers,&#8221; said<br \/>\nAndrew Campbell, a senior electrical engineering major from<br \/>\nTerry and president of the campus chapter of the Institute<br \/>\nfor Electrical and Electronics Engineers.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The program was started in 2006 by Mary Sada Scott of Horn<br \/>\nLake, then vice president of the Engineering Student Body.<br \/>\nCampbell oversees its operation. He is assisted by current<br \/>\nESB president Christin Burns, a senior chemical engineering<br \/>\nmajor from Hartselle, Ala., and vice president Joey<br \/>\nParkerson, a junior chemical engineering major from French<br \/>\nCamp.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Most of the material and courses students have questions<br \/>\nabout are ones the tutors themselves struggled through in<br \/>\nprevious semesters, Campbell said. &#8220;I feel our experience<br \/>\nreally give us unique insight into explaining the material<br \/>\nin terms they can better understand,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I think the tutoring program is a great idea,&#8221; said senior<br \/>\nengineering student Scott Montgomery of New Orleans. &#8220;It is<br \/>\na lot easier for students to learn from people they feel<br \/>\nare their equals, especially when those people have taken<br \/>\nthe same courses and made the same mistakes.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information about the UM School of Engineering,<br \/>\nvisit<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.olemiss.edu\/depts\/engineering?school\/\"><br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.olemiss.edu\/depts\/engineering?school\/<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Chris Turbevill (right), a chemical engineering major from Southaven, helps Leslie Mahaffey, from Tupelo majoring in general engineering, during a tutoring session.
