\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi students have the
\noption of being put on a waiting list if classes are full
\nduring spring and winter session registration, thanks to a
\nnew feature of the university’s campus management system.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“The wait-listing system will work a lot like standby
\nbooking for an airline,” said Maurice Eftink, associate
\nprovost and dean of the Graduate School. “Once a course or
\nsection has been booked to its limit, the next student who
\ntries to book will be asked if he or she would like to
\nplace themselves on the wait-list.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIf someone already booked in the class drops out, the first
\nperson on the wait-list is moved into the class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA student can log onto wait-lists for any number of classes
\nas long as wait-listed and regular-booked classes together
\ndo not exceed 21 hours.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“For example, a student might book for 15 hours as regular
\nbookings, and then place themselves on a wait-list for two
\nthree-hour courses,” Eftink said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe campus management system is a complete and integrated
\nset of computerized functions. It manages student, employee
\nand financial records, including class registration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJoe Norman, systems analyst III in Information Technology,
\nsaid the university began considering the wait-listing
\nsystem in February 2006. IT began meeting internally to
\ndiscuss the project in early January of this year. “We ran
\nits first major internal test on the system Oct. 22.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis new process should be helpful to students whose
\nregistration window might open later than others and
\nprevent frustration as students try to secure spots in
\nclasses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUnder the old system, Eftink said, “If a student really
\nwanted to get into a course, he or she would return to the
\nbooking interface every few days or weeks in hopes that
\nsomeone had dropped the course and that they were the first
\nto notice.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The process was frustrating to the student and would be
\ninefficient for the departments, since courses would often
\nwind up not being fully booked.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEftink encourages all students who get on a wait-list to
\nattend the first week of the class, as the wait-listing
\nsystem will operate through the first week. After the first
\nweek of class, all wait-lists are erased.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn his three years at Ole Miss, junior history major
\nAlyosha Downing has felt the frustration of not being able
\nto get into an important class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Sometimes I would sit in front of the computer waiting
\nmorning, noon and night for someone to drop the class so I
\ncould pick it up,” he said. “This system will make
\nregistration a lot easier and less time consuming.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEftink said, “Students will no longer have to hit the
\nsystem repeatedly to try to get lucky and find an opening.
\nOnce a student books and adds to the wait-list, the system
\nwill then inform the student via e-mail if he or she has
\nmoved up.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Just sit back and read e-mails.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHowever, the new wait-listing system will have some
\nconsequences for students. Students no longer can have a
\nfriend drop a course and then immediately take their spot.
\nWait-listing will also make it more difficult for students
\nto switch sections of the same class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“In a sense, wait-listing follows the first-come,
\nfirst-served principle,” Eftink said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
